Queen of Wild Cards novel Chapter 23

Just as Stella was about to take her exploration a bit further, a knock echoed at the door. She reluctantly pulled her hand back.

*Damn. Didn't even get to feel the abs.*

She opened the door to find Nadine standing in the hallway.

"Chloe, dear, I heard Julius's bodyguards arrived, and the staff mentioned hearing some terrible screaming. What's going on? Is he alright? Can I see him?"

"He's perfectly fine. Just sleeping. Come take a look."

*So much for soundproofing,* Stella thought. He must have screamed incredibly loud.

The older woman rushed to the bed, finding her grandson sound asleep. However, his deathly pale complexion and shallow breathing terrified her.

Had his condition worsened? Wasn't the warding-off-death marriage supposed to be helping?

"He looks entirely exhausted," Nadine fretted. "And what were the bodyguards doing here?"

"He had some errands for them before he fell asleep," Stella lied smoothly. "You can ask him about it when he wakes up. I wasn't really paying attention."

She had only been here two days; the less she said, the fewer mistakes she’d make. He could deal with his own grandmother.

"Alright, let's let him rest. I'll head back downstairs. If you need anything at all, just tell Larry."

"Will do. Thanks."

After Nadine left, Julius slept for another hour. When he finally opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was the girl curled up on the sofa, bathed in the soft glow of a warm lamp. With the curtains drawn, the golden light made her look incredibly peaceful and sweet.

Then, she opened her mouth.
