In truth, he had been slightly apprehensive, but she had provoked him, and he had acted on impulse. He couldn't believe a twenty-eight-year-old billionaire had let a young girl goad him into swallowing an unknown substance.

"Smart man," Stella smirked. "Are you heading downstairs for dinner?"

"Do you want me to?"

"Your grandmother was up here earlier. She heard the screaming and knows the bodyguards were here. They're coming back tomorrow, so you might want to explain things before she assumes the worst."

"What did you tell her?"

"Just that you had them running errands. I told her to ask you when you woke up."

"I know." He had only been covering them because of the necrotic odor. Now that the smell was gone, the blanket was unnecessary.

Down in the dining room, Nadine was overjoyed to see her grandson out of his bedroom. Ever since the doctors had given him three months to live, he had completely isolated himself. Seeing some color return to his face convinced her that the warding-off-death marriage was working miracles. The Abbot had been right all along.

"Are your legs feeling better, dear?" Nadine asked gently.
