Yvonne had been agonizing over the night's events the entire car ride home.
But even after racking her brain, she still couldn't figure it out. How had things spiraled so spectacularly out of control?
She and Rhoda had literally been about to strip Stella and that guy. How had they accomplished absolutely nothing while she ended up looking like a human pincushion?
If Rhoda hadn't looked exactly the same, she would have assumed a ghost was messing with her.
Byron stared at her welt-covered body. "Are you having an allergic reaction to alcohol? That doesn't make sense. You drink all the time and you've never had a reaction."
Catherine returned with the cream and gently began applying it with a cotton swab.
"Dad, please just stop. I feel like I'm dying."
"Then tell me, did you manage to smooth things over with the Blackwoods tonight?" That was his primary concern.
"Dad, look at me! I'm miserable, and you don't even care! All you care about is the Blackwoods!"
How could she tell him she had done absolutely nothing to repair their relationship?
How could she tell him she had teamed up with someone to set up Stella and completely failed?
How could she tell him she had been left out to feed the mosquitoes all night?
Obviously, she couldn't.
Her father would scream at her until she went deaf!
Lately, his affection for her had drastically cooled, and he had even hit her over the Blackwood situation.
There was no way she was telling him the truth.
Byron groaned in frustration. "What are you even good for? You finally get an invite to the Blackwoods, and you come back looking like a freak.
Of course I care about the Blackwoods! Do you have any idea how much money the family lost after Julius pulled all his investments from us?"
Her parents rushed her straight to the emergency room.
The doctor ran a battery of tests before prescribing medication and hooking her up to an IV.
Catherine asked, "Doctor, is my daughter having an allergic reaction, or what? How long until she's better?"
The doctor replied patiently, "We ran an allergy panel, and it's not an allergic reaction. The swelling and welts are from severe mosquito bites, and the fever is a direct result of that."
After listing off a few post-care instructions, the doctor left the room.
He was honestly completely baffled. To get bitten this severely, the patient must have been standing inside a literal tornado of mosquitoes.
Just as he had seen in another patient a few rooms down, who was in an even worse state.
How could anyone get bitten that much and not feel a thing?
