"I will."
...
After leaving the hospital, Julius was urgently called back to the office by Sean Cahill.
By the time he finished work and returned to the Imperial Gardens, planning to pick Stella up for dinner at the estate, she was nowhere to be found.
Hadn't they agreed this morning to go back to the estate for dinner tonight?
She had promised.
Where was she?
Had she gone ahead without him?
He called the head butler at the estate, only to be told she hadn't arrived.
He tried calling her cell, but no one answered. His messages went entirely ignored.
He figured she was probably busy running the DNA tests, so he decided not to push it. Giving her some space right now was probably for the best.
He had no desire to show up at the estate alone, mostly because he had no idea how he'd explain things if his grandmother asked.
Not wanting to sit alone in an empty house, he headed to Jason Blackwood's bar for a drink.
"Julius, did you get into a fight with Stella or something?"
Ever since his brother got married, he rarely went out drinking at night unless it was a mandatory business event. Showing up out of the blue tonight practically screamed marital trouble.
Jason continued his rambling. "Come on, you're older than her, can't you just let her win? She just got back a few days ago, how are you guys already fighting?
Before she came back, you looked like a walking corpse. Now that she's finally home, instead of spending time with her, you pick a fight and come here to drink? If Grandmother finds out, she's going to rip into you."
Julius took a slow sip of his drink. "Jason, nobody is going to think you're mute if you stop talking for two seconds. You're giving me a headache."
His younger brother had always been a motormouth. Give him a stage, and he could perform a one-man play.
Besides, he was only three years older than Jason. Since when did that make him 'older'?
And when had he ever looked like a walking corpse?
During the days Stella was gone, he was just a bit quieter, spoke a little less, and didn't have much of an appetite. That was it.
