Queen of Wild Cards novel Chapter 76

"The Matriarch already anticipated you'd show up. She gave strict orders that she has absolutely no interest in seeing you. Do yourselves a favor and leave."

Right at that moment, Larry, the butler, was returning from running errands. Worried that the three of them might try to slip through the gates when the car entered, the guard approached his window. "Larry, these three won't stop harassing us. They refuse to leave. What should we do?"

Larry had already spotted the trio. Rolling down his window, he addressed Frederick directly. "Mr. Hawthorne, you should head home. The young master and his wife don't reside here, and the Matriarch has no desire to receive you."

Frederick rushed over, immediately putting on a sycophantic smile. "Larry, we go way back! Please, just let us inside to see the Matriarch.

We have something extremely important to tell her. We originally wanted to speak with Stella, but since she doesn't live here, speaking to the Matriarch works just as well. It's regarding Stella's mother."

He was not leaving empty-handed. Whatever it took, he was getting inside the Blackwood Manor today.

Larry frowned. Something regarding the young madam's mother?

He knew Stella had bad blood with her family and had been trying to retrieve her mother's belongings. He decided it was best to go in and mention it to the Matriarch.

"Wait here. I'll go inform the Matriarch. And don't even think about forcing your way in. That's trespassing, and we will involve the police."

Frederick didn't dare offend him. He nodded eagerly. "Yes, of course, we won't try anything. Thank you for passing along the message."

Larry signaled the guard to open the gates and had his driver pull the car onto the grounds.

Once inside, he and the driver slowly unloaded the trunk, instructing the maids on where to organize everything.
