“Now.” Samson turned to Nellie, leaning in close to inspect her eyes. Her pupils were dilated, just as mine probably were. “Nellie, tell me the truth about what actually happened in Crescent Hollow.”

With a nod, Nellie began. Over the next few minutes, she repeated everything that happened in Crescent Hollow -starting with my arrival and ending with today’s events. She told them how desperately I cared for Ivy, how I lied at first but only because I needed to see my child, and how Serena repeatedly threatened her and eventually forced her to take part in my attempted murder.

Then, she told us what happened with Natasha; how Natasha used warmth and safety and the promise of a better life to convince Nellie to testify against me. How she didn’t know I was still alive, and only wanted to obey the woman who she thought to be her new Luna. How desperate she was to simply not die.

When she was finished, she was a little breathless but smiling wanly. It seemed that the truth coming out was a relief to her, like letting a great weight off her shoulders. My throat felt a little itchy, but I didn’t think much of it.

“Well then.” Samson straightened, glancing at his wife. “The truth has been spoken. What do you have to say for yourself, Natasha?”

“What do I have to say for myself? What do I have to say for myself?” She scoffed, practically spitting on the floor. “Clearly, the serum doesn’t actually work. Jayne must have mixed it improperly.”

The healer bristled at that. “How dare you! I know exactly how to mix the serum,” she retorted, snatching an old, weathered book off the shelf and holding it up for all to see. The page was open to a recipe for the serum. I’ve been a healer for three decades now; I know how to mix a simple serum!”

Natasha’s face flushed. Even she couldn’t deny Jayne’s professionalism.

“Elena?” Samson turned to me then. “Do you have anything to add to Nellie’s story, since you took the serum as

well?”

I opened my mouth to respond, but no words came out-only a strained, choked sound, like the sound someone might make if someone had their fingers wrapped around their throat.

I frowned, reaching up to touch my neck. It was then, as I lifted my hand, that I noticed how my fingers had gone from pale and slender to thick and red.

I tried to speak again, but it was no use. All that came out this time was a dry, wheezing cough. My throat constricted from the movement, making my breath catch. I tried to inhale again, but no air entered my lungs.

“Elena? Elena!” Tyler said, rushing over. He placed his hand on my forehead and cursed. “Jayna, she’s having a reaction!”

Jayne’s face went white. She shoved Natasha out of the way, sending Natasha slamming against the wall with a cry. But she ignored her and dropped to her knees in front of me. My vision was already flickering. I was trying desperately to breathe, but nothing could enter through my closed throat.

I doubled over, scrabbling at my neck with fingers that were like sausages. As I fell from my chair, I slammed into the desk, sending glass flying and shattering against the floor. My legs flailed, and I rolled around on the rug, feeling for all the world as if my eyes might pop out of my head just like all of those public service

announcements.
