Granny eventually began to nod off, and I knew it was time to let her rest. I stood quietly, trying not to wake her, but she reached out and caught my wrist.

“I want to say how proud I am of you,” she whispered, those cloudy eyes piercing into me just like they used to before the cataracts. “No longer a scared, desperate little girl, but a healer walking amongst rogues-thank you for everything you have done for them. For my people.”

“There’s no need to thank me,” I said softly. “I took a vow when I became a healer, and that’s all.”

Granny smiled at that, then drifted off to sleep. Lana and I said goodbye to the others, then stepped outside once more. The sun was reaching its zenith; I still had some time to get ready for the ceremony tonight.

Lana and I hadn’t made it far, though, before a familiar voice called out, “What are you doing here?”

I grit my teeth and turned to find Natasha standing at the end of the alley. An assistant was standing beside her, practically collapsing under the weight of multiple boxes and shopping bags. There were so many of them that I couldn’t see the person’s face.

“Visiting Granny,” I said calmly, approaching her. “She’ll pass soon. I was helping soothe her symptoms.’

Natasha’s lips puckered. “I figured you would return and immediately play the ‘innocent savior’ act,” she sighed. “Tyler’s ceremony is tonight, you know. It’s a little late to supplant him as heir, don’t you think?”

I blinked. “You think I came back just to take Tyler’s place as Alpha?”

“It’s what you’ve always wanted, isn’t it? To insert yourself in my family and take my son’s rightful pack.”

Lana stiffened beside me, but all I felt was annoyance. Natasha had made it clear on multiple occasions over the years that she still thought I wasn’t really Samson’s daughter, and that I was only here in an attempt to take over Nightshade pack.

“Natasha, you know I took vows,” I said, folding my arms over my chest. “I shall never follow any ambitions outside that of healing.”

Natasha scoffed. “Ah, right. Your precious vows. You do love to recite them.” She took a step toward me. “You might be perfect to everyone else, but I know the real you.”

“And the ‘real me’ is…?”

“A schemer who will do anything to steal a life she never deserved.”

“Natasha…” I pinched the bridge of my nose. “What will it take to finally convince you that I’m not after what you think I’m after?”

“Simple. Don’t come to the ceremony tonight,” Natasha hissed. “Leave first thing in the morning, return to your ‘rugged’ life in the wilds, with the rogues, where you belong. And leave my family the hell alone.”

I opened my mouth to reply-to tell her that I was going to support my brother tonight, whether she liked it or not-when the person holding the boxes suddenly shifted, revealing a face I knew all too well.

“Hello, Elena,” Beth cooed, curving her lips into a saccharine smile.

Lana’s breath caught. Before I could react, she muttered an excuse and grabbed my arm, pulling me away. I had to practically jog to catch up to her long strides, and when we rounded the corner, I wrenched my arm away and turned to her.

“What was that about?” I asked.

Lana’s face pinched. “Beth and Natasha have been… cozy lately. I think it’s best if you just stay away from both of them while you’re here.’

“Cozy?”

My friend nodded. “Melvin is retiring soon, so Beth will likely take his place as Natasha’s Delta. Melvin was bad enough, but Beth? She was practically raised to be Daddy’s perfect little witch.”

Lana was right, as much as I hated to admit it. Beth had tormented me over the years-she always had something cruel to say, and she and her gaggle of friends loved to push my buttons. If she was training to be Natasha’s Delta, then it was a recipe for disaster.
