“Sorry, folks!” my father’s Beta’s voice called out. “Everyone stay put while we get the lights back on!”
The crowd stayed still while they waited. However, I knew the room like the back of my hand, even in the dark. I took this as an opportunity to slip away unnoticed, so I began carefully picking my way toward the side door that I knew led to the servants’ stairs.
Just as I was slipping through the door, the lights came back on. I didn’t turn around, though, and instead kept going. The door shut behind me, muffling the sounds of the party. I leaned briefly against the wood, inhaling deeply to soothe my nerves, then hurried down the narrow hallway and toward the stairs.
My foot had only just touched the bottom step when I heard the door open behind me. I glanced over my shoulder, and my breath became lodged in my throat.
No. No, no, no!
Dark hair. Broad shoulders. A square jaw. A low brow.
And grey eyes fixed directly on me.
Kade was here after all.
Shit.
A long moment passed. Neither of us spoke-just stared at each other in shock in the dimly lit corridor.

stairs.
“Hey!” Kade’s voice called after me, and I heard him taking the stairs behind me. With my heart in my throat, I picked up my pace, taking the stairs two at a time.
On the second floor, I hurried down the corridor. The familiar pathways blurred around me as my quick strides turned into a jog, then an all-out sprint, heels clicking on the floors. “Wait!” I heard Kade call, but I didn’t stop. I had to get away, had to lose him-
But in my haste, I took a wrong turn. I found myself running into a dead end-a small windowed alcove that overlooked the gardens. It was too late for me to turn back; when I did, I nearly slammed straight into that broad
chest of his.
Kade’s scent overwhelmed me as he leaned over me, pressing his hands into the wall on either side of my head and crowding me into the corner. Instinct kicked in, and I extended my claws, prepared for a fight if need be.
“Get.Away. From. Me,” I growled. Whatever brief tug of the bond I’d felt was now completely gone, replaced with only the pain and rage I’d felt for the past seven years. This fucker had killed my daughter. I hated him. I
