The desperation in Kade’s eyes turned to fury. He swiped his thumb across his split lip, smearing fresh blood over his cheek, and pushed away from the pillar. His broad frame seemed to suddenly fill the corridor.

“That’s the last time you lay a hand on me,” Kade hissed, storming toward Tyler. “You’re not a kid anymore. You’re an Alpha now, and we’ll fight like Alphas.”

“Gladly,” Tyler snarled, shrugging off his jacket and letting it drop to the floor-right alongside his crown, which had fallen during his mad dash down the corridor.

The two men growled and began to move toward each other. Without thinking, I placed myself between them.” Stop!” I cried out, pressing my hands into both of their chests. “Don’t fight! Not now! Not tonight!”

Tyler didn’t look at me; he just continued to glare at Kade, chest heaving with an Alpha’s righteous fury. My brother’s soft, kind face had turned hard and angry in a way I had only seen him a few times since we’d met.

Kade glanced briefly at me, then at the point of contact where my hand met Tyler’s chest. Then, sneering, he looked back up at his opponent.

“So your new mate is protecting you, huh?”

I blinked in surprise. New mate? What the hell was he talking about?

Another low growl rumbled in my brother’s throat. “Move out of the way, Ellie. I’ve been wanting to teach this asshole a lesson for seven years now.”

“Ellie?” Kade scoffed. “Pet names already-”

Before he could finish, more footsteps echoed down the hall. My father and Lana’s parents all rounded the corner. Behind them were three Gammas, Amelia amongst them. My father’s face paled when he saw the scene, and without hesitating, he commanded the Gammas to charge.

Kade stepped back and held his hands up in surrender. The Gammas surrounded him, pointing their spears at

him.

“Alright, alright,” he hissed, twisting his face with frustration. “I know when I’m outnumbered.”

“You should have known before you ever set foot here,” Tyler grunted. He wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me flush against his side, making my breath rush out with the force of it. “After seven years, you dare to come here and harass Ellie?”

Kade’s lip curled hatefully. Grey eyes darted to me, then back to Tyler. “I was invited.”
