Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 176

Chapter 176

Something that wouldn’t respond to normal medicine.

“I have to,” I said, looking at Tyler, then my father. “You understand that.”

My father hesitated, then nodded. “If you feel it’s the right thing to do, then we won’t stop you.”

Tyler looked like he wanted to protest, but at a single, withering look from our father, he snapped his mouth shut.

I left them after that. The party was still in full swing when I entered the banquet hall; the guests were none the wiser to the confrontation upstairs.

I paused in the doorway, looking around, then spotted Kade standing by the bar with a drink in his hand. Amelia was hovering nearby, watching him warily. I offered her a thin smile that was supposed to be reassuring but felt more like a grimace as I passed and approached Kade.

I cleared my throat and folded my arms. He stiffened, then turned to look at me. There was a brief pause.

Then: “You have blonde hair again.”

I narrowed my eyes. “You have sixty seconds to explain yourself. The clock starts now.”

Kade’s jaw ticked, but he set aside his drink and took a deep breath. “It’s Debbie,” he said without preamble. Her condition is worsening. She hasn’t been responding to typical treatments for a few years now.” He glanced at my hands. “I heard you have… special abilities.”

My heart ached at the mention of Debbie, although I kept my face neutral. Poor Debbie… I wanted to help her. I really did. But that would likely mean going back to Crescent Hollow, where Kade lived with my evil twin sister.

Where I had once been a slave.

Where my daughter had died.

The professional in me wanted to help her, but the girl who had been hurt so badly resisted the very notion with all her might.

“I heard rumors of your abilities about six months ago,” Kade went on, rushing a little now that half his time had passed. “I didn’t know it was you; they only call you ‘Silver One’, and you were never in one place for long, so I never caught up to you.”

“So you stalked me.”

“Like I said, I didn’t know it was you.” Kade huffed. “Look, Elena, I know you and I have a… history, but Debbie is innocent. If you can help her, I’ll pay you handsomely.”

I couldn’t help the scoff that slipped out of me at that. Kade frowned. “What’s wrong?”

A payment. He was offering me money, as if the one thing that I truly wanted in this world was the child he could never give back to me, because he had stolen her life away before it even fully took root.

I didn’t want fucking money, and it felt like a goddamn insult that he’d even brought it up. Whatever urge I’d had to take him up on his offer was suddenly snuffed out like a candle in the wind.
