Kade tried his best to reassure Serena, but nothing worked. Her bitterness only grew and grew with each anniversary that passed, and most of it was directed at a child. Ivy was smart enough to notice and promptly hurled Serena’s hatred back at her with double the force.

A faint smile curved Kade’s lips at the thought. He would never admit it, but Ivy’s stubbornness was strangely endearing to him. Maybe because it reminded him of-

Bang!

Kade startled at the sound of the crash coming from upstairs, dropping the plate back into the water with a splash. His mind immediately went to Debbie; she must have been having one of her episodes.

He didn’t hesitate to leave the kitchen, taking the stairs two at a time. Serena picked up her skirt and followed him.

Kade flung open Debbie’s door and found her writhing on the floor in the middle of the room, snarling and snapping at her restraints.

Her straitjacket was straining against her limbs, and the vase of fresh flowers on her bedside table had been shattered. Petals, water, and broken glass were strewn across the floor.

Debbie was inching toward the glass, tongue flicking out of her mouth. Kade gasped and rushed over before she could slip the glass into her mouth and crunch down on it in an attempt to hurt herself.

“No!” Debbie snarled as Kade lifted her easily-she’d lost so much weight recently that she didn’t even weigh ninety pounds at this point-and carried her to the bed. “Lemme GO!”

“No,” Kade said calmly. He laid her down, gently pressing one hand into her shoulder to keep her there, and fumbled in his pocket for her medicine with the other. “I can’t do that, Debbie. You’ll hurt yourself.”

Debbie let out a string of incoherent words that Kade was pretty sure were supposed to be curses, although it was all jumbled and nonsensical. Finally, he managed to open the bottle of medicine and had to force a few drops into her mouth.

Kade always hated doing this. Always hated having to force narcotics into his sister’s mouth. Hated the way she looked at him with those big, distrusting, terrified eyes-like he was no better than the rogues who hurt her all those years ago.

But after a few minutes, her eyes fluttered shut, and her body relaxed. Kade waited for a moment longer before he pulled back and looked down at his sister.

“See?” Serena whispered, gesturing to Debbie’s sleeping form. “This house is no place for a child to live.”

Maybe Serena was right. Maybe this was no place for a child to be-having to see her own aunt in a straitjacket, being force fed medicine like an asylum patient.

“If only Elena would help,” Kade muttered as he began cleaning up the broken glass.

Serena’s eyes widened at the mention of that name. She took a step back, but just then, Kade’s Beta-having heard the commotion-appeared in the doorway, blocking her exit.

“Alpha.” Ajax looked around the room in confusion. “The healer didn’t come?”.

Kade looked up. “What are you talking about?”

“The healer you were searching for. I thought she arrived at the pack today.” Ajax turned to Serena, who was completely frozen. “I thought you let her in earlier…?”

Kade turned to Serena. “Elena was here?” he breathed.

Serena’s mouth opened and closed several times. Finally, she managed to squeak out a small, “Yes.”

“And you didn’t think to tell me?”

“I… I didn’t recognize her right away-I thought she was a rogue.

Kade narrowed his eyes. “You drove her away, didn’t you?”
