Chapter 194
Elena’s POV
I really didn’t want to return to the house the next day. Not now that I knew that my dead daughter’s replacement might be there, mistaking me for my twin sister.
But for Debbie’s sake, I went anyway.
Someone had put her straitjacket back on in the night, it seemed. And although she wasn’t currently in the midst of an episode, she was still twisting around on her bed, straining against the jacket.
I walked over and sat on the edge of her bed, gently whispering to her as I pressed my hand to her forehead. Cool energy soaked into her clammy skin, and a few moments later, she relaxed and drifted off to sleep. Judging from the worsened dark circles under her eyes, it seemed she hadn’t properly rested all night.
“You had this thing on her all night?” I asked, looking at Kade.
“I had no choice. She had an episode in the middle of the night. The drugs didn’t work this time.”
“The drugs?”
Kade reached into his pocket and pulled out a small brown bottle, which he handed to me. I uncorked it and took a whiff of the contents. The strong scent of herbs and narcotics hit my nostrils, making me wrinkle my nose.
“Don’t give this to her anymore,” I said, handing the bottle back to him.
Kade furrowed his brow. “Why not?”
“Because it might be what’s masking her illness from my wolf. Furthermore, it’s too strong of a narcotic-not healthy for prolonged use, and it might be contributing to her worsened episodes.”
As I spoke, I reached into my bag, pulling out a tincture I had mixed overnight in my room at the inn. I handed it to Kade. “Give this to her instead.”
“What is this?” Kade asked, taking the bottle.
“It’s a mixture of muscle-relaxing herbs. It should help her rest without clouding her mind too much. Give her a drop under her tongue twice a day or as needed.”
“Will it knock her out like the other stuff?”
“Not necessarily.” I stood, gathering my bag once more, and made to leave. “It’ll just relax her muscles and lower her blood pressure. While the other tonic is a slap to the face, think of this as a… gentle hug. Oh, and get that damn straitjacket off of her. I don’t want to see it again.”
With that, I walked over to the door and opened it. “Elena,” Kade called out, and I hesitated. I turned to look at him and saw that a deep furrow had formed in his brow.
“What is it?”
“I don’t think you understand how… dangerous her episodes can be without the drugs. She’ll hurt herself. Hurt others.”

My throat bobbed. I glanced at Debbie, who was still sleeping peacefully-for once, her features seemed to have smoothed out somewhat, although she still looked gaunt, pale, and like a ghost of her former self.
“Give it to her sparingly, then,” I said. “In the meantime, I’ll do everything I can to figure out what’s wrong with her. Hopefully, she won’t have to suffer for much longer.”
Kade looked a little relieved. “Thank you.”
I nodded curtly before exiting. Tyler was waiting for me by the car, leaning against the hood with his hands stuffed in his pockets. The snowstorm had turned the landscape into a glittering field of white overnight, but with the morning sun bouncing off the snow, it was actually pleasantly balmy.
“Ready?” he asked, pushing away from the car as I approached.
“Ready.” I opened the passenger side door and tossed my bag inside, ready to get out of here for now-not only to get started on my research, but also so as not to have to see Kade, Serena, or the replacement for a week.
But, as always, the universe had other plans. Suddenly, I heard a tiny voice call out, “Mommy!”
I looked up to see a little bundle of yellow mittens and scarves barreling toward me, cheeks and nose flushed from the cold. “Ivy” crashed into my legs before I could stop her and looked up at me with that same impish grin from yesterday. In her bright red winter parka, she looked like a little round apple.
