Chapter 196
Elena’s POV
“You were cruel to her.”
“I wasn’t cruel.”
“You pushed her away.’
“Gently.”
“It was a push nonetheless.”
Sighing, I sat up and turned to look at Ava’s spectral form. She lay curled up in the forest clearing, calm as usual, but her eyes were piercing as she looked at me.
She was disappointed in me.
“The connection we felt to the child was not for nothing.” Ava pointed out, stretching and rising. “It is possible
“We’ve been over this, Ava.” I looked away, jaw clenching. I refused to hold onto the hope that my daughter was still alive. I had learned the hard way too long ago that such things would only hurt me in the long run. “Her blood is on that blanket. Father’s agents confirmed her disappearance. She’s gone.”
Ava wasn’t pleased with my response, but she had no argument this time. Yes, we had felt a connection to the little girl named Ivy-she looked like an older, healthier version of my daughter. She even had the same name.
But she was not my daughter. She was Serena and Kade’s child. She was a replacement. Why they had chosen to name her Ivy, I wasn’t sure-perhaps they were trying to cover up the death of the original child. Perhaps they were trying to rewrite history by claiming that my child had always been Serena’s and that Kade would never have a child with a lowly slave.
Or maybe they were just assholes who had no empathy or respect for the dead.
Either way, I was staying out of it. I had only returned to Crescent Hollow to cure Debbie, and I intended to do just that—and as quickly as possible.
What happened before or after was none of my concern. I had no intention of remaining in that place once my work was complete. I intended to get right back on the road as soon as I could and never set foot there again.
Suddenly, a hand on my shoulder pulled me out of my meditation. I opened my eyes to find Tyler looking at me; the car had been parked in the driveway. We were home.
“We’re here,” Tyler said. “Sorry to pull you out of your happy place, but I’m hungry and need to pee.
“It’s alright.” I stretched and rubbed my eyes. I must have been under for an hour. My stomach was growling, and my legs were itching to get the hell out of this car.
We headed inside, where our father was impatiently waiting in the foyer. The moment he saw me, shoulders in his hands and turned me this way and that as if inspecting me for injury.
he took my
“No one hurt you?” he asked, glancing at Tyler. “Was there trouble?”

“No trouble,” I said, forcing a smile and pulling away. I kissed my father on his cheek and kicked off my boots. I didn’t want to tell him about the child; it would only upset him. Tyler and I had agreed to keep it between us, and Lana, of course, because she would probably break my jaw if I kept such a secret from her.
