Chapter 212
My father touched my arm before I could leave. “If you’d like, I’ll give you my card. You can go to the shop today for a new dress.”
“It’s fine. I’ll just wear one of the ones I already have.”
“Don’t you want a new gown for the ball?” he asked. “You might meet your second chance mate tomorrow…”
My jaw tightened. “Look, Dad, I know you’re excited for me, but it’s not like I was ever really planning on meeting anyone,” I said calmly. Before he could answer, I left. I thought I heard him say Mason’s name, but I was too far away at that point to be sure.
Jayne was tending to a patient in the infirmary when I found her. She held her finger up at me as I approached. “ Just one moment,” she said. “I’ll be right with you.”
I nodded and sat on one of the nearby empty cots, waiting patiently.
“There. Now drink this,” she said softly, handing the girl a cup of herbal tea. Judging by the scent alone, it was one that was commonly used for eliminating early pregnancies. “It’ll all come out like a heavy period, and then it’ll be over. You’ll have some cramping, but I’ll be here the whole time. Just let me know if you need anything, okay?”
The girl nodded, eyes wide as saucers. She stared into the teacup for a moment before taking a deep breath and drinking it.
Jane straightened and turned toward me. “Well?”
I told her everything. She listened the whole time, then nodded, furrowing her brow. “So it’s even more severe than I thought… Luna’s Bane has no known cures, you know.”
“I know.” I looked at my hands. “I tried using my ability, but even that didn’t work. I was hoping to come up with a treatment plan, but…” My voice trailed off.
Jayne thought for a moment, then started moving toward her office. “I have a contact in another pack who may be able to help. I’ll reach out and let you know when I hear back.”
“Thank you, Jayne.” She just waved over her shoulder. Once she was gone, I glanced at the girl, offering her a reassuring smile and placing my hand on hers as she finished her tea. She was instantly soothed and let out a soft sigh of relief, leaning back on the pillows. I watched her shut her eyes, her hands cupped over her low belly.
“Elena?” Lana stepped into the room, dressed in her training leathers, and jabbed her thumb over her shoulder. “I was about to go for a run. Wanna join?”
I considered her offer. I’d been so exhausted when I arrived, but if I was being honest, I wasn’t sure if I could rest. My mind was racing. Maybe a little fresh air would do me some good.
A little while later, I found myself jogging alongside Lana down the familiar wooded path. The stretch in my muscles and joints was soothing, my breath coming out in white puffs in the cold air.
Neither of us spoke. We rarely did when we ran. It was part of what I liked so much about running with Lana— just focusing on putting one foot in front of the other. It was the rare time when my mind wasn’t working at a mile a minute, since my feet and lungs were doing all the work instead.
