Chapter 42

Elena’s POV

“Lana!” Lana’s mother leapt to her feet and wrapped her arms around her daughter. “What’s wrong, honey?”

“My… My stomach,” Lana choked out, her voice strained with pain. “It… It hurts really bad!””

“Take her to the infirmary!” Samson barked, rising from his chair. “Quickly!”

Without hesitation, Lana’s father scooped her up-although the movement made her cry out even more—and swept her out of the room. I followed without thinking, holding her hand the entire way to the infirmary. Her palm was cold and clammy already, and each step seemed to send a fresh wave of pain jolting through her.

When we arrived, the healers quickly moved Lana to a free cot and began to check her over. I bit my lip as I looked down at my friend, her face twisted in pain and anguish. She was already coated in sweat, her skin having taken on a sickly pallor.

“Hm… Your appendix doesn’t seem to have ruptured,” the lead healer said, pulling her stethoscope away from Lana’s belly and hooking it around her neck. “Did you eat anything strange lately? Undercooked meat, perhaps?”

Lana shot the healer a look that could kill.

“Absolutely… not,” she ground out, still clutching her belly in pain. “I would never—”

“Lana got deathly ill with food poisoning once as a child,” Lana’s mother explained. She gently smoothed her hand over her daughter’s clammy forehead. “She’s been very cautious about food ever since then and often prepares her own meals because of it.”

“And none of us are sick,” Tyler pointed out. “If it was something we ate at the party, it wouldn’t just be Lana who got ill, right?”

The healer furrowed her brow. “Well, if she already has a weakened stomach due to her past illness, then she could have gotten sick without anyone else being affected,” she murmured. “But I can perform some more tests to be sure…”

As the healer scurried away to gather some more supplies, I leaned over Lana, studying her. Something was wrong; she wasn’t clutching her belly, I realized, but rather… her womb. Her hands were splayed over the spot where her left ovary would lay, in fact.

“Lana…” I leaned down and whispered so only she could hear me. “When was the last time you had your period?”

Lana’s eyes snapped open, widening as she looked at me. She drew her brows together, thinking for a moment, then whispered back, “Now that I think of it, I guess I am a little late…”

“Can I examine you?” I asked softly.

She hesitated, but nodded and moved her hands aside so I could get a closer look. I waved Tyler away, who looked at me in confusion but drew the curtain around us and gave us some privacy.

“What are you doing?” Lana’s mother asked.

“I just want to look at her pelvis,” I replied. I gently placed my fingertips over Lana’s womb. “Is it okay if I touch you?”

Lana nodded, clutching her mother’s hand tightly. Carefully and gently, I began to palpate around her reproductive organs. I felt nothing out of the ordinary-no hard lumps, nothing concerning. If anything, my touch

seemed to ease some of Lana’s pain, and she let out a soft exhale of relief.

But then…

I felt a warmth near her left ovary.

Curious, I leaned closer. And that was when I felt it—the same thing I’d felt with the Omega who’d been bitten by a tick.

I swore I felt something pulling me toward that spot. Not Lana’s ovary, exactly, but more precise…

Her fallopian tube.

I couldn’t explain it, but in that moment, I simply knew what was wrong with her. I could sense a tiny mass in her fallopian tube. A mass in the shape of…

“Lana, I think you might be suffering from an ectopic pregnancy.”

Lana lifted her head abruptly, wincing with the motion. “What?” she breathed. “Are you sure?”

I nodded, glancing at Lana’s mother. Her face was pale. “Lana, I thought you took your herbs every time!”

“I do,” Lana said defensively, but then she blanched. “Actually, now I remember… I forgot to do it a few weeks ago.”

“Lana…” Her mother sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose exasperatedly.

“Now isn’t the time for speculation,” I said, and both Lana and her mother agreed. We quickly called the healer over, and I told her everything I had discovered. Her brows shot up further and further as I told her what I’d felt.

“Well, if that’s the case, then it’s even more serious than we thought,” the healer said, jotting down some notes on her clipboard. “We’ll have to take her in for an emergency surgery to remove the embryo.”

I stepped out of the way, letting them take Lana to the operation theater. Through the window, her mother and I watched nervously as they put Lana under and began to cut into her belly

“How could you tell?” her mother whispered, holding me tight. I rubbed soothing circles on her back, even though I was just as terrified. I’d only really just met Lana, and yet she was already my closest friend, and I loved her like a sister.

“I don’t know. I just… felt it,” I said. “I felt a pull toward her left fallopian tube, and I just had this… instinct that there was something there.”

Lana’s mother made a small sound of distress. “Oh, Goddess… I always told her to be careful and make sure she takes her contraceptive herbs!” She shook her head. “But I suppose accidents can happen. Goddess knows she was one.”

“Lana was a surprise baby?” I asked.

Her mother nodded and smiled wanly. “Yes, she was. The happiest surprise I ever got, but a surprise nonetheless.”

I couldn’t help but smirk a little at that. Assuming Lana recovered just fine, I wasn’t going to let her live that one down.

Finally, after what felt like hours, the healers sewed Lana back up and took her back to the infirmary. Her mother remained by her cot while we waited for her to wake up, brushing her sleeping daughter’s hair out of her face over and over again.
