Chapter 57
Kade’s POV
Kade knew something was off while he was having dinner with Serena.
He couldn’t quite put his finger on it, but something just felt… different. It was as if there were another presence at the back of his mind, close enough to sense but too muted to understand what it was.
Something was wrong. Kade’s hackles were raised as if there were an intruder in the pack, but every time he glanced over his shoulder, there was no one there.
The strange feeling persisted throughout dinner with Serena. He found himself glancing at the window, at the darkness beyond, as if he might see a familiar face pressed against the glass at any moment.
Of course, there was nothing. Kade began to chalk it up to wishful thinking again; after all, he had only just publicly announced Ivy as his heir a few days ago, hoping that it would draw Samantha closer-if that was really her living in Nightshade.
Nothing had happened since then. She didn’t come. Kade didn’t receive any calls, letters, or unexpected visits.
He had only received radio silence from her. Just about everyone else was enraged, but Kade didn’t care about any of them. He waited and waited for some sign, but none ever came.
Kade had begun to think that it wasn’t her after all. That the girl who looked like her was just a lookalike, or perhaps a third sister that no one was aware of. Hardly his concern; he already had to deal with the bond he shared with Serena and didn’t want another right now. Especially not from the ex-rogue girl who was causing so much trouble.
But now… He wasn’t so sure. Throughout dinner, no matter how much he kept telling himself that it was just his mind playing tricks on him, that he was imagining things because he had developed some sort of attachment to the idea of Samantha still being alive, he couldn’t shake the feeling.
Everything changed when a knock came at the dining room door.
“Come in,” Kade called out, setting aside his wine glass. A Gamma on guard duty entered and bowed sharply at
the waist.
“Sir, there’s an Omega at the door for you,” the Gamma announced. “She says it’s urgent.”
Kade lifted a brow. “At this hour? What does she want?”
The Gamma shook his head. “I’m not sure, Sir. She said she only wants to speak to you.”
Sighing, Kade set his napkin next to his empty plate and stood. “Maybe this is our cue, Serena. This Gamma will take you to your guest suite for the night. We can continue this conversation in the morning.”
Serena looked a little disappointed, but smiled anyway and stood, curtsying, “Goodnight, Alpha Kade.”
“Goodnight.”
Leaving the Gamma to escort Serena to her suite, Kade smoothed down his shirt and made his way to the front door. There was a young Omega woman standing in the foyer, shivering in her nightgown with only a coat and a pair of boots thrown on. It seemed as if she had come here quickly.
“What are you doing here?” Kade asked, stopping a little ways away from her. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
The Omega curtsied and averted her eyes. “I hurried here as soon as I could, Alpha. There’s… something I think

you should know.”
“Well? Spit it out.”

She took a deep breath. “A little while ago, I ran into someone in the packhouse claiming to be a new Gamma in the pack. She… She looked eerily like Samantha, but with silver hair.”
Kade’s interest was piqued at that. Samantha but with silver hair, running into Omegas in the packhouse late at night-was it really her? Had she dyed her hair, hoping to slip into Crescent Hollow and check on the baby?
“Where is she now?” Kade asked, taking a step toward the Omega.
The girl seemed to shrink a little under his shadow. “I… I let her go.”
“You let her go?”
“I-I saw she had a knife. I was scared, and it was unexpected. Besides, Samantha is dead! It didn’t make any sense to me. Maybe I did see a ghost, but I had to tell you!”
Kade pinched the bridge of his nose, willing himself to remain calm. It wasn’t her fault. He was the only person insane enough right now to actually think that Samantha was somehow alive and not buried six feet under the ground.
“Did you see where she went?” Kade asked.
The Omega blinked at him, and Kade’s blood ran cold as the implication swept over him. She had come to the Alpha House.
Which meant that she really was searching for the child.
