Chapter 10 I’ve Never Seen a Body This Bad
Wynne had never seen a body in such a bad shape.
Flothed
His internal organs were all damaged to some degree, causing constant, agonizing pain. As long as Jerome was awake, he was basically in constant pain.
“You’ve got a crazy high pain tolerance,” Wynne said, her long lashes fluttering.
Her voice sounded casual, but there was a definite bite of sarcasm in it.
Jerome ignored her and reached out to call the internal line.
Not long after, Alex showed up with a medical kit. He froze for a second when he saw Wynne in the room.
“Mr. Cromwell, your medicine.”
As Alex walked past Wynne, his expression turned cold, clearly not happy.
“Ms. Sinclair, why are you in Mr. Cromwell’s room?”
“What, did I kill your whole family or something?”
Wynne smirked, sharp and cold. She wasn’t the type to just take it quietly.
“Ms. Sinclair, please remember this-Mr. Cromwell can’t drink coffee,” Alex said stiffly, his tone staying
hostile.
Only then did Wynne recall the coffee she gave Jerome at the hospital.
Not only was it a triple-shot black coffee, but it was also iced.
“Alex.”
Jerome shot him a cold warning look. Alex immediately lowered his head but still handed over the medicine.
“That medicine treats the symptoms, not the problem. It’s a strong painkiller, but it also makes his stomach ulcers worse. That’s why he’s coughing up blood.”
Wynne raised her hand and pushed aside the meds Alex was holding.
“The biggest problem with your Mr. Cromwell is…”
She instinctively looked at Jerome. Dressed in a black robe, he looked cold and distant. As their eyes locked, Wynne swallowed the words she was about to say, “He’s given up on living.”
With his organs this damaged, the relentless pain every single day and night made simply being alive a
form of torture.
Honestly, dying would probably be easier than living like this.
“What’s the problem?” Alex asked urgently, his loyalty getting the better of him.

“Alex, tell the kitchen to make something to eat,” Jerome interrupted, his voice rasping.
He leaned back against the sofa, seemingly unfazed that Wynne had seen right through him.
“Mr-”
“Go.”
Alex took the order and left.
Something cool brushed against Wynne’s foot. The white python was coiled there, lifting its head anytime Jerome moved.
It was a snake with a conscience.
“Stay away from me.”
Jerome’s breath still carried a faint smell of blood.
His eyes swept over her slightly loose collar, landing on that tiny mole by her collarbone.
He looked away.
Wynne stood across from him. Under the warm wall light, her pale skin looked even smoother. Her legs were long and straight, and her pretty face carried that same lazy, tired look.
“I didn’t know you couldn’t drink coffee…”
She paused, then gave a small cough.
“But you didn’t say no either, so we’re splitting the blame 50-50!”
She leaned back against the cabinet, propping herself up on her hands. The pose made her collarbones stand out sharply, and she spoke with a smooth, practiced ease.
Deep down, Wynne didn’t want him to die. Besides, he was her meal ticket.
He was moody, physically broken, and his mental state was questionable at best…
But maybe this was just some twisted version of Stockholm Syndrome.
Jerome coughed, the faint, metallic scent of blood filling the air once again.
“Sharp tongue.”
His voice was low and heavy, impossible to read, but still gave off a “don’t get close to me” vibe,
Wynne wasn’t paying attention to that, though.
From her angle, she could see the line of his waist under the slightly open robe.
It tensed when he coughed.

It looked like it would feel really good to touch.
“Keep this up, and you’ll die.”
Her long hair spilled over her shoulders as she moved.
Beautiful. Ethereal.
“And without you, that little kid loses his only protection. How long do you think he’d last on his own?”
“Wynne!”
Jerome’s cold, vicious eyes locked onto her face. A dangerous tension filled the air, ready to snap.
“You know I’m telling the truth,” Wynne said with a light chuckle.
She looked as relaxed as ever, not the least bit afraid of him.
“But I can ease your pain.”
Jerome’s situation was tricky. It wasn’t something she could fix in a day or two. At best, she could only help ease the pain for now.
“What do you want?”
Jerome suddenly grabbed Wynne’s wrist. His eyes were dark and unreadable, cold to the core, yet something shifted in his gaze the moment he looked at her calm, cool face.
“Or rather, what are you trying to get out of me?”
His grip tightened slightly as he pulled her closer. The sudden movement was loud enough to startle the giant python coiled under the sofa.
The room went quiet.
It also left Alex, standing at the door with a tray in hand, completely stuck.
Walking in right now didn’t feel like a good idea.
Wynne blinked. One hand pressed against the black leather sofa as she steadied herself. A cool, clean scent filled her breath-it was Jerome’s, mixed faintly with the smell of blood.
“I do want something,” she said.
She flashed a smirk that had a bit of an edge to it.
Jerome looked down at her coldly, waiting for her to narne her terms.
Even Alex, standing stone-faced outside the door, pricked up his ears, expecting her to ask for something
outrageous.
“Equality,” Wynne spoke calmly.
“I’m not your employee. If I don’t want to do something, you don’t get to order me around. I stand next to

you as an equal,” she spoke casually.
Her eyes were bright. Her slender fingers lifted and lightly touched the corner of Jerome’s lips, where a trace of blood remained.
“That’s it.”
She brushed her fingers together, the red smearing softly against her pale skin.
Jerome instinctively tightened his lips.
“Wynne…”
There was something unreadable in his dark eyes-deep, complicated, impossible for anyone to figure out.
“In this family, there’s only one person who can stand next to me as an equal. Do you know who that is?”
He sounded casual, like a hunter slowly setting a trap.
Wynne’s slender wrist was still trapped in his grip as she waited for him to finish, her amber eyes full of curiosity.
After a moment, Jerome let go of her hand and retreated back into the shadows.
“Get out.”
Wynne immediately sensed his mood had turned worse.
She was puzzled.
So, what’s the answer?
Who gets to be his equal?
Even after she walked out of the room, the question stayed in her mind.
At the door. Alex had a complicated expression as he handed the tray of late-night food to Wynne.
He watched her walk away, biting back the words he wanted to say.
In the Cromwells, the only person who could stand beside Jerome as an equal was his wife.
Wynne slept until she woke up on her own.
The moment she opened her eyes, she saw Dylan bathed in morning light-soft and adorable-quietly playing with the tip of the white python’s tail.
Today, Rolly had a little shark-crochet hood on its head. Paired with its huge body, it looked absolutely adorable.
“Hhk, hhk.”
