Amelia Johnson had no clue why, but even through the phone, Darien Taylor’s voice always sounded so low and smooth–it somehow just hit right.
“Mmm, sure. Let’s hear it.”
No wonder the guy wrote the trilogy “The Vanished Pen Pal.” Damien could pull a random story out of thin
and still keep Amelia totally hooked. There was one part, though, that really creeped her out. “Wait, if
woman isn’t actually the guy’s mom, then… where’s his real mother?”
nien chuckled softly. “Silly girl, it’s just a story. Don’t overthink it.”
t Amelia couldn’t just brush it off. Maybe it was the way Damien described every little detail–so vivid it lt like it actually happened.
“Still, wouldn’t someone know if their mother wasn’t really their mom?” she asked, half–joking but half–serious.
That made Damien laugh out loud, clearly amused. He didn’t push the conversation further, just switched to a coaxing, almost soothing tone. “Alright, it’s late. Time for bed.”
“Well now I’m too creeped out to sleep! This is totally your fault,” she griped.
She couldn’t stop thinking about that story–how the guy’s real mom might’ve been killed and then replaced, and no one even noticed. It was the kind of thing that should be impossible. But hey, fiction is fiction, right?
“I’ll come over.”
Damien hung up right after saying that, not even giving her a chance to process it.
“Wait, who’s scared here, me or you?” Amelia muttered, half annoyed, half amused.
Minutes later, Damien showed up faster than usual. He shrugged off his jacket, laid down next to her like it was the most natural thing in the world, and pulled her into a tight hug, burying his face in the crook of her neck. The brush of his hair on her skin sent shivers down her spine.
Sensing something was off, Amelia asked gently, “You okay?”
Damien didn’t say anything–just pressed his lips together and shook his head. But his arms around her tightened, like he was terrified she might vanish any second.
Amelia sighed softly and started patting his back rhythmically, trying to lull him to sleep. But no matter what she did, he just couldn’t seem to relax.
“Wanna watch a movie instead?” she suggested.

Since Amelia was working on a detective suspense novel, she picked a thriller for inspiration. They sat close together, but Damien clearly preferred full–on cuddling.
As the movie played, Amelia leaned into him, gradually getting drawn into the story…
Then came the intense part where the female lead was hiding and the killer was quietly sneaking up behind her, axe in hand, about to strike.
Just as he raised it high, everything went dark for Amelia–turns out Damien had covered her eyes. A scream rang out from the movie.
Amelia grabbed his hand. “Dude, what are you doing?”
She thought he was just messing with her.
Damien replied calmly, “It’s pretty gory. Didn’t want you to see.”
That one short sentence hit her right in the feels. She nestled into him a little more and replied softly,” Okay.”
At that moment, she felt completely safe.
It wasn’t anything dramatic, but Amelia had a feeling she’d remember it for the rest of her life.
The next day was the weekend. Instead of heading to the Taylor Group, Damien Taylor decided to sleep in with Amelia Johnson.
“From the Carter family in the neighboring city?” Damien asked.
“Yeah,” Amelia said while spreading strawberry jam on her sandwich. “Met her at the social last night. She seems pretty genuine.”
“No way, is she the kind that’d help count the bills after getting sold?” Emily Carter’s voice suddenly chimed in as she came down the stairs.
Amelia shot her a glare. “Only you would say something like that.”
Emily grinned and greeted Damien before pulling out a chair to sit down. “Amelia, I’m just saying, people these days are complicated. You never really know who someone is deep down…”
She wanted to add that, with all Damien’s years in the industry, he could definitely spot who was shady. But Amelia kicked her under the table before she could say more, so she quickly shut up and grabbed a
