“You’ve been working closely with the neighboring city project lately, right? I…”

Damien’s expression darkened. He raised a hand, cutting Richard off. “Summer’s not feeling well. I’d appreciate it if you could head back for now. I’ll stay and take care of her.”

Grace Williams quickly tried to smooth things over, “Yes, yes, with you here, we’re completely reassured.”

“Summer, then you should just… spend time with Mr. Taylor…” Realizing how awkward that sounded, Richard quickly corrected himself, “I mean, try to get some good rest. We’ll come get you tomorrow, okay?

Amelia Johnson couldn’t help but scoff internally. That’s her dear old dad for you–his daughter’s in a hospital bed, and all he cares about is networking.

Once Richard and Grace were gone, Damien turned his full attention back to Amelia. He gently brushed her cheek with his thumb. “Earlier… What were you about to say?”

The whole moment from before was already gone, and with it, Amelia’s spark of courage. She just shook her head. “Nothing. Another time. I think I’ll nap for a bit.”

She quickly shut her eyes, pretending to sleep, trying to escape the situation.

She wasn’t even sure what exactly she felt for Damien. Most of the time, she just really wanted to see him. Being around him made her relaxed and happy.

But Damien?

Every time something started to spark, he’d back off just as quickly. Like he was avoiding getting close.

Why though?

She shifted in bed without thinking, accidentally brushing her injured arm, gasping softly in pain.

“Summer?” Damien was by her side in an instant. He checked her arm to make sure it hadn’t reopened, then carefully propped pillows on each side. “This should help you stay comfy without bumping it.”

Amelia gave a small “mm” in response, her eyes carrying a hint of annoyance.

Damien noticed. “What’s up?”

“You…”

Just starting to speak, Amelia froze. There was no way she could actually ask those questions out loud- they were way too embarrassing.

Damien chuckled. “Alright, how about a story then?”

This time, he made up a little fairy tale on the spot. Amelia listened closely, completely drawn in. His voice was so soothing that she found herself slipping into sleep.

Damien adjusted her position so she wouldn’t put pressure on the wound, then gently placed a kiss on her soft cheek. His gaze lingered on her sleeping face, full of affection.

She had naturally fine arched brows and thick, long lashes that looked like tiny fans.

Honestly, no matter how he looked at her, she seemed perfectly made to fit his taste. Every angle, every glance–he couldn’t get enough.

He’d thought countless times about proposing to Amelia. But he could feel it–she wasn’t there yet. He didn’t want to rush her or scare her away.
