“My leg’s messed up because of you,” Isla shot back with a glare.
“Who told you to chase me? If my brother hadn’t brought an extra wheelchair, I’d have had to
carry you!”
“Shut up!”
On the bed, Amelia Johnson’s breathing finally evened out. That familiar scent washed over
her–Damien Taylor was back.
“Babe, I’m home,” Damien’s voice was low and tired.
Amelia turned over to face him, gently massaging his shoulders with her small hands. “You
must be exhausted. Just sleep.”
It was rare to see Damien so beat. Amelia felt a sting in her nose from how much she felt for
him.
Damien had rushed back after Brandon Taylor told him Amelia was coming home for the Mid–Autumn Festival. To get back on time, he had pulled crazy hours at work.
She didn’t want him spending the holiday alone.
And he couldn’t stand the thought of them spending their first Mid–Autumn apart.
The next morning, a rooster crowed outside. The sky was just starting to lighten.
It was just a little after 5 a.m.
Worried that the noise would wake Damien, Amelia quickly cupped her hands over his ears. When the rooster finally went quiet, she sighed with relief.
In a soft, sleepy whisper, “Annoying rooster, don’t wake up my Damien.”
She rubbed her eyes, then snuggled right back into his arms.
Damien was a light sleeper–he was already awake the second the rooster crowed. But Amelia’s thoughtful gesture made him pretend otherwise.
His girl really was the sweetest.

Around six, Liam Taylor walked out of his room, hair sticking up in every direction. “Auntie,
can we have chicken stew today?”
Hannah Foster chuckled, “The rooster woke you too? Go back to sleep for a bit.”
