Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 110

Chapter 110 The Shill

sat where she was with her phone in her hand, barely paying attention.

“Our last lot tonight is called Clearheart, a powder made by the Snowbell Healer. It draws poison out of the body, and in an emergency it can save a life, a heart attack included…

“And the Snowbell Healer is in this room tonight. Whoever takes Clearheart gets to meet her and to be received as her guest of honor!

“As her guest of honor, you get her care for free, for life, on whatever terms you ask for. If she’s willing, she’ll even take you on as a student!”

The auctioneer’s last line set the whole room off.

“The Snowbell Healer is actually here?”

“Which one of them is she? Take Clearheart and you’re her guest of honor!”

“That’s an incredible thing to hand out. I’ll spend every cent I have on it. I’ve got no talent for medicine, bu

I want to meet her and get a photo. My family would never stop talking about it!”

“If I were her guest of honor, my family would still be telling that story a hundred years from now!”

“Start the bidding. I’ve got everything I own ready to go!”

Down on the floor, the room was already boiling over.

The auctioneer called it out. “Clearheart opens at $10,000,000, with a minimum raise of $2,000,000!”

“I’ll go $15,000,000!”

“Make it $30,000,000!”

“I’ll take it to $50,000,000.” The voice came soft and light, and Nora knew it.

It puzzled her. If Cordelia was the Snowbell Healer, Clearheart had come out of her own workroom, so there was no reason for Olivia to be bidding on it at all. None of it made sense.

Still, if taking Clearheart meant meeting the Snowbell Healer, Nora would bid too.

She leaned against the window and looked down at the floor. “I’ll go $100,000,000.”

She’d swung hard right out of the gate, and every head in the room came up to look at her where she leaned against the glass.

Olivia faltered, then leaned out of her own window and called back. “Then I’ll go $200,000,000.

She meant to have it.

Nora turned her head, and Olivia smiled right back at her. “Nora, Clearheart matters to me. Somebody out there is passing themselves off as the Snowbell Healer, so I’m not letting you take it.”

So that was the reason. Somebody really was selling under the Snowbell Healer’s name tonight.

Nobody has ever seen the Snowbell Healer. You say this one’s a fake, so it’s a fake? Maybe this one is real and the one you know is the fraud.” Nora fired it back, then tossed out the next bid. “Make it $500,000,000.”

The jump more than doubled the bid, and the whole room pulled in a breath. Even Adrian had to look at her twice.

Olivia’s face soured. “You’re raising that hard, Nora?”

Nora’s answer came out lazy. “What can I say? My husband is rich, and this doesn’t even count as a drop in the bucket.”

Then, she added, as though it had only just come to her, “Grandma handed me another $50,000,000 today. I have more money than I know what to do with.”

Olivia’s mouth twisted at the bragging, and underneath it she burned.

It was true. Julian had money, and as his wife, half of it was hers.

Cordelia saw her losing her grip and stepped in for her. “We’ll go $700,000,000.”

Nora didn’t blink. “Make it $800,000,000.”

Bidding at that level put Clearheart far past anything it was worth, even if the Snowbell Healer really had made it.

She needed that Clearheart, though, because she wanted to know who was behind it.

Nora seemed to want it even more than Cordelia did, and Olivia refused to lose to her. She set her teeth. “We’ll go $1,000,000,000!”

That was as high as she could go. One more raise and she’d have to let it go.

And if the price climbed high enough that Nora badly overpaid for a Clearheart that wasn’t worth it, Constance would be disgusted with her.

There was nothing wrong with that either.

“Ohhh.” Nora drew it out. “That’s a big jump. I’ll leave it, then. I have no use for Clearheart anyway.”

The auctioneer brought the hammer down. “Sold, Clearheart, $1,000,000,000!”

Olivia hated what it cost her, but she let out a breath.

Sienna leaned out of her window and stuck her tongue out at Nora. “Spending a man’s money is never the same as spending your own. See? You don’t have what Olivia has. That was her own money, every cent of it.”

Nora looked over. “So Ms. Blithe paid for it herself. I assumed she’d have the Westons cover it, so I thought worse of her than I should have. Spending your own money must feel wonderful.

“Not like me. All I have is my husband’s money.”

Every mention of that husband wrecked Olivia’s composure, and all she could manage was a stiff pull at her
