Chapter 116 Don’t Disappoint Me
Nora’s oil did a great deal more than help. It was a knockout, and on an ordinary person it would hold all night.
Nora waited a while and still wasn’t sure, so she brushed a finger across Julian’s lashes. “Julian?”
She touched his lips. “Are you actually asleep?”
Then, she poked his cheek. “Out cold?”
Once she was sure of it, Nora got up and left the bedroom.
The instant the door shut behind her, Julian opened his eyes, and in the dark room they were bright and
cold.
One corner of his mouth curled slowly into something that wasn’t a smile.
“Nora, don’t disappoint me.”
All he wanted was for her to be in the study working on something of her own.
Then, he opened the study feed on his phone, watched her lift the Orion proposal out of the drawer, and the cold mask on his face finally cracked.
Frost seemed to settle over him all at once, and grief came with it.
He had trusted her! In the end, she had betrayed him anyway!
Nora stood in the courtyard with the Orion proposal in her hands.
Thunder broke open across the sky in a long roll.
Nora looked up at the master bedroom window on reflex. The curtains were pulled tight and there was nothing to see.
She pressed her lips together. “I hope you keep believing me.”
Nora got in the car and drove off.
The wind howled, the thunder kept coming, and the red Porsche disappeared into the dark.
Fat drops came down soon after, hammering against the windows.
Miles pushed the bedroom door open and found Julian standing at the window, tall enough and still enough to be part of the dark.
“Mr. Weston, Mrs. Weston has driven off. Should we go after her?”
Julian watched the storm outside, and when he spoke there was nothing in his voice at all. “No. I never rated that project anyway. I’d already decided to drop it.”
He simply hadn’t expected her to come and take the proposal for real.

Julian didn’t want the project and he’d meant to walk away from the bid, but her taking it went through him
Reice
It hurt worse than the illness ever had at its worst.
“Mr. Weston, the proposal is worthless now, but to stop this happening again, I think you should…
Julian looked up, unbothered. “Maybe she has her reasons. Her grandmother is still in the hospital.”
Miles watched him make excuses for Nora and had nothing to say to it.
“Do you know who she’s taking it to?” he asked.
“Mandy.”
That was a guess. Nora had Mandy’s bangle on her wrist.
“It’s Trevor Lane,” Miles said. “The Lanes are bidding on Orion too.”
Everything about Julian hardened. “Get the car.”

The weather was foul that night, wind and rain together, and Nora’s wipers couldn’t keep the glass clear.
She drove straight to the Wyndmere.
She went up to the room number Mandy had given her.
The door opened on pitch dark and a thick, sweet smell that hit her in the face. Her eyes narrowed. “Mandy?”
Behind her, the door slammed shut.
Nora turned and found Trevor throwing the deadbolt. “What are you doing here? Where’s Mandy?”
He smiled at her. “Mr. Pierce is busy, so he sent me to pick it up.”
Trevor looked at the proposal in her hand. “You really did get it. So you don’t care about Julian that much after all. Still carrying a torch for me?”
Nora’s look went cold. “Don’t flatter yourself. I’d sooner go for a dog than for you.”
“Say whatever you like. Hand the proposal over and I’ll take it to Mr. Pierce.” Trevor put his hand out.
Nora watched him, on her guard, and thought about it. “Open the door and you can have it.”
Trevor came closer. “What’s the rush? I’m not going to eat you. Give me the proposal, we’ll sit down, and anything can be worked out.”
He came on a step at a time, and she gave ground a step at a time.
With the backs of her legs almost at the bed, Nora stopped and pushed the proposal into his chest. “Take it.
