Chapter 128 The Coat in the Trash

Mandy and Nora were past pretending with each other, and there was no reason to keep the act up.

That meant using what she knew from her previous life to put her flat on her face!

Adrian collected a stack of cards from company heads, and a good many of them wanted to talk about working together. It took him close to an hour to get through it.

Mandy hurried over with a glass of water, her eyes bright on him. “Congratulations, Ace. You got Orion

“Thank you.” Adrian kept it polite.

Mandy didn’t catch any of that, and she pushed the glass a little closer. “You must be thirsty. Have some

water.”

Adrian looked down at her hand. The wrap had slipped off her shoulder, and there was a mark low on her

throat.

One look, and he was back in that room last night with Trevor on top of her.

It turned his stomach, and his brows came together. “No, thank you. I’m not thirsty.”

The smile went off Mandy’s face and her eyes filled. “Ace, are you still disgusted with me?”

“No. Don’t go inventing things.” Adrian reached out to touch her hair the way he used to, stopped halfway, then pulled the hand back and put it in his pocket.

He asked her, “Do you know Director Bowen?”

Director Bowen was the one who had made the call on the project.

Mandy saw the hand go back in his pocket, and the pain of it stopped her breath. She made herself act as if she hadn’t, bit her lip, and shook her head. “No. I only spoke to him once today.”

“What did you say?” Adrian wanted to know.

She moved toward him, and for every step forward, he took one back. Everything about him was pushing

her away.

If she pressed any closer, he’d simply turn and walk out.

She had no choice, so she bit her lip and stopped. “Ace, come closer. This is only for you.”

Adrian really was curious. He looked at the tears standing in her eyes, and he remembered that she was the one who had saved him, and that today’s win was partly hers.

He pulled in a breath, pushed the sickness down, moved closer, and bent his head a little. “Go on.”

Mandy knew he couldn’t stand her, so she held herself back from getting too close, but she still lifted up to his ear and said it low enough that nobody else could hear.

“I said I know where Lydia Marsh’s body is.”

Her voice was very soft, and it went through Adrian like a thunderclap. “You… is that true?”

Mandy looked at him and nodded. “Yes.”

She’d gone straight from the Wyndmere that morning to find Director Bowen and say exactly that one line.

After all, Lydia Marsh was a woman Curtis Bowen had killed by accident 15 years ago, and nothing about it had ever come out.

She only knew because Harlan had mentioned it in her previous life, and in this one she’d used it to hand Adrian the Orion bid!

Julian could be as good as he liked. This time he’d lost the bid, and he’d lost it to what she knew from a life/ he hadn’t lived!

Adrian saw how serious she was and closed the distance in a hurry, dropping his voice. “Do you have any idea how dangerous that is?”

Knowing a secret like that about a man with that kind of power, and then saying it out loud, was asking to be killed!

Mandy looked up at him, and everything she felt was in her face. “I know. But I love you, and I wanted to help you, even if it cost me my life.”

They were close enough that their faces nearly touched, close enough to feel each other’s breath.

It should have been the kind of moment where a man leans the rest of the way in.

Except that Adrian looked at her mouth and thought about Trevor kissing it.

His skin crawled, and he backed off, sick to his stomach. “Thank you for this. Don’t let this reach anybody

else.”

The hurt came up in Mandy’s face.

Adrian saw it and only felt sorry, and his voice softened. “I’ll have the driver take you home. I still have work.”

The warmth was still in his voice, and she could feel the distance under it all the same.

She caught the cuff of his sleeve, frightened. “You are disgusted with me, aren’t you? Is what I did for you not enough? Ace…”

Adrian cut her off gently. “No. You did very well, and you’re still my girl. I’m just really busy right now, and you haven’t slept all night. Go home and rest.”

He looked at how hurt she was and made himself put a hand on her hair after all, keeping his voice soft. “Whatever it is, we’ll talk when we’re both free. All right?”

The tone was a question, and the thing underneath it wasn’t.

Mandy knew that pushing any harder would only make him want her less, so she let go without a word.
