Chapter 130 Family Discipline

u think Mandy traded on her looks with Curtis Bowen?” Julian shook his head at it. “He has no interest in women, and a man in that seat doesn’t take whoever shows up at his door.”

Nora shook her head too. “No. Mandy doesn’t have that much to trade on. It has to be something else she’s holding over him.”

She looked up at him, opened her mouth, then shut it again.

She’d been about to ask him to look into Curtis. There had to be something badly wrong there, and she wanted it out early so Orion would blow up early and take Adrian and the Pierces down with it!

Then, she thought better of it. She couldn’t keep putting things on Julian, and this one reached past business into government, and she didn’t want to bring any of that down on him.

He watched her start and stop and guessed at it. “I’ll have someone look into him.”

Nora turned it down. “Don’t go to the trouble. I’ll handle it myself.”

Julian frowned at her, annoyed. “You’re Mrs. Weston. You’re my wife. Stop being so polite with me. If you need help, ask for it.”

“That isn’t…”

Julian cut her off, low. “And this isn’t only your problem. It’s the company’s. Those fossils on the board only know how to collect a dividend. They can’t weigh anything. All they see is money.

“The sooner I have something on Director Bowen, the sooner Orion blows up, and the sooner they shut their mouths.”

Nora knew what he meant and stopped refusing. “Thank you.”

Julian gave her a long look, then turned his face forward, cold again.

Everything coming off him said not to come near.

Nora had nothing to say to that.

What did I say this time? None of it makes any sense.

Nobody said a word the whole way, and the air kept getting heavier, until even breakfast felt like a last meal before an execution.

They got back to the Weston Estate without either of them speaking.

Julian was angry, and as far as Nora was concerned he’d gone cold on her out of nowhere, so she wasn’t about to be pleasant back.

The car had barely stopped in the courtyard before the maid waiting there had the door open.

Hattie came over fast. “Mrs. Weston, some of your family is here.”

“My family?” Nora’s face lit up. “Is it Grandma?”

ring that, Julian straightened his back and pulled his mouth up, trying to make his face look less like

stone.

“It’s your father and stepmother,” Hattie said. “And Mandy.”

Nora had been walking faster, and now she slowed right down, and the pleasure went out of her face and left nothing behind it.

Julian, who had been working on a smile, let his mouth come back down, and the hard face and the cold eyes made him worse to look at than before.

Hattie watched both of them change in a second and had no idea what to make of it. “What happened?”

Miles let out a breath. “What do you think? Mrs. Weston made Mr. Weston angry.”

Hattie tipped her head at him. “Looked to me like Mr. Weston made Mrs. Weston angry.”

Miles gave a short laugh and drove off to put the car away.

Nora came into the sitting room and found Victor and the rest of them on the couch, talking carefully.

Constance sat with them, worn out.

“Grandma, we’re back.” Nora greeted her first, then looked at Victor and frowned. “Dad, you could have told me you were coming.”

She hadn’t had them at her wedding, and she wanted them here even less on an ordinary day.

Victor watched three maids wait on Nora as she came in, one taking her bag, one bringing her house slippers, and Hattie handing her a glass of warm water.

She always drank something the moment she got home.

At the Sinclair house, there were three staff in total, housekeeper included.

Here, three of them worked on Nora before she was even through the door. That was real money.

Victor set his face. “Your wedding came up fast and we didn’t attend. We’ve wanted to come several times since and held off so as not to intrude. But this time you’ve made a serious mistake, and Madam Weston is surely too kind to say anything to you.

“As your father, I’ve come to teach you properly.”

Constance hadn’t slept, and it showed. She stayed polite. “Nora is home now, Mr. Sinclair. Say whatever you came to say.”

Victor’s face changed in a second into something eager to please. “Madam Weston, I only just heard that Nora took the Orion proposal, and I came straight over. I apologize on her behalf.”

Mandy spoke up from the side. “Madam Weston, the result came out. It went to the Pierce Group.”
