Chapter 131 The Good Stepmother
Vitor had bought the whip on the way over, purely to show how serious he was about disciplining his daughter.
Constance’s head was hurting badly enough to put her half to sleep where she sat, and when the whip came out, she frowned and her face went cold.
“Mr. Sinclair, when something like this happens, a beating doesn’t fix it.”
Victor assumed she was holding it against him and said it in a hurry. “Of course. Nora has gone much too far this time. She’s broken the law.
“My suggestion is that we return the full settlement the Westons paid, that the two of them divorce, and that you call the police and press charges. Whatever sentence she gets, she gets.”
What he wanted was Nora divorced from Julian and in prison, and the Westons no longer holding any of it against him.
Constance’s face stayed grim as she looked at him. “That’s how you solve a problem, Mr. Sinclair?”
Victor picked his words carefully. “Madam Weston, does the plan not satisfy you? Nora did wrong, and I won’t cover for her.”
Nora let out a laugh. “Grandma, what my father means is, send me to prison and the Westons will stop blaming him. He’s afraid the Sinclairs get wiped out.”
Mandy turned to Constance. “Madam Weston, our father would never spoil a child into ruin. He’s thinking that if Nora could take a project file yesterday, somebody could talk her into taking Weston Group secrets next time and bring the whole family down.
“He’s only suggesting the police because he wants that possibility gone.”
In the future, secrets really would leak out of the Weston Group.
Saying it now meant that even if Nora never divorced, there was a bomb buried under her that could go off whenever it suited.
Victor looked appropriately pained. “That’s exactly it. What father would have the heart to send his own daughter to prison otherwise?”
Yvette spoke up. “Madam Weston, Nora isn’t mine by blood, but I’ve treated her better than if she were.
“If you’ll let the Orion file go, I’ll do anything you ask.”
Constance saw straight through her and let out a short, cold laugh. “So Mrs. Sinclair is a very good stepmother. No wonder Mandy turned out the way she did.”
Yvette missed the edge on it entirely and answered modestly. “Mandy made something of herself. I hardly taught her anything. All my effort went into Nora, and then she does something like this. Really…”
Constance had no patience for the performance and cut her off. “Well then, if Mrs. Sinclair is such a good stepmother, closer to Nora than a real mother, you can confess to taking the file in her place and serve the

sentence for her.”
ra blinked. After the Orion file, she hadn’t expected Constance to still be standing on her side.
“What?” Yvette went blank.
From Wed
Constance smiled at her, cold. “What is it? You don’t want to go to prison for Nora? Weren’t you the good stepmother? Closer than blood?”
Yvette had no intention of going to prison, and it came out of her in a rush. “Madam Weston, it isn’t a question of wanting to. Nora is the one who committed the crime. The police would see through it in an hour. I couldn’t carry it.”
Julian spoke, and his voice was cold. “You don’t need to worry about that. If you’re willing to serve the time/ for Nora, every piece of evidence will point at you.”
Yvette looked up at the two of them, and both of them were perfectly serious. One nod from her and they’d start arranging it.
She’d only wanted to look like a good stepmother. She hadn’t wanted to put herself in a cell.
It came out of her sheepishly. “But wouldn’t that be, well, making a mockery of the law? It doesn’t seem right.”
Julian looked at her without warmth. “That isn’t your concern, and neither is the rest of it. Just tell us whether you’re willing to be a good stepmother and serve the time for Nora.”
Nora raised her eyebrows at her. “Well, good stepmother? Are you willing or not?”
She was more than happy to watch Yvette get that mask pulled off her.
And Victor could be dragged in with her. It was a good opening to set the two of them against each other.
So Nora looked at him too. “Dad, talk Yvette into it. Let her serve my sentence. Then the Westons drop it, I’m still Mrs. Weston, and I can still help the Sinclairs out.”
“That’s…” Victor was suddenly stuck, his eyes moving from Yvette to her and back.
Constance and Julian didn’t hurry them. They only sat there and watched.
But the quiet had a weight on it that put the whole room on pins and needles, and nobody dared breathe loudly. Even Mandy kept her mouth shut.
After two or three minutes, Constance ran out of patience and asked Yvette, “Have you decided, Mrs. Sinclair?”
Victor looked up at them, plainly angry.
He didn’t think it through, and he leaned over and said it to Yvette, low. “You’re the one who said you’d go to prison for Nora. Put up with it for a while.”
The corner of her mouth pulled, and she turned her head and gave him a look.
Victor knew exactly what that look meant and put his head straight back down.
