Hf an hour of being beaten, and now Mandy had to apologize on top of it!

Her temper had nowhere left to go, and all she could do was nod and swallow it. “Nora, I’m sorry

Under the cold eyes of Constance and Julian, Victor put his own dignity down and apologized to Nora with an awkward smile. “Nora, it’s my fault. I shouldn’t have taken Mandy at her word. Don’t hold it against your father.”

He had a strong sense of himself as a man and a father, and apologizing to a daughter was a miserable thing for him to do.

It had gone on long enough, and Nora could see how worn out Constance was, so she let them off. “For Grandma’s sake, we’ll leave it there.”

Victor finally let out a breath. He hadn’t made her angry, and none of it had come back on him.

Constance hadn’t slept, her head was splitting, and she’d been up early entertaining the Sinclairs through all of it. Now the pain was worse, hammering away inside her skull.

She had one more thing for Victor, and her voice went low. “I don’t care how you treated Nora before this. She’s the Mrs. Weston of this house now, and she’s my grandson’s wife.

“If you’re going to be a father who plays favorites, then play them for Nora, not for people who don’t

matter.”

Victor bent over it. “Yes, yes. Today was all my fault. I was in too much of a hurry and too afraid Nora had done wrong, and I didn’t ask enough questions. It won’t happen again.”

Constance let that pass, then said, “Mr. Sinclair doesn’t come often. Stay for lunch.”

She looked over at Nora. “Take them around as well. Let them see how well you’re living here.”

Nora nodded. “All right. Let me get you upstairs to rest first, though. You look worn out. I’ll rub your head and you’ll sleep better.”

Constance patted her hand and agreed.

A headache made sleep harder, not easier.

Nora walked her upstairs, washed her hands, worked a scented balm into them, and then stood behind her and worked her temples.

It was a light chamomile, and with her hands working, the head that had felt ready to split open eased a little.

Nora thanked her, and she meant it. “Thank you for standing up for me back there.”

Constance kept her eyes shut and let the relief do its work. “I made the offer myself and brought you home for Julian. You’re my grandson’s wife and the Mrs. Weston of this house. Standing up for you is what I’m supposed to do.”

nstance cut her off, unhurried. “As long as you do nothing that harms Julian and nothing that harms the Westons, I’ll stand up for you even after the two of you divorce. Do you understand?”

The message underneath it was that if anything like last night happened again, anything like taking a company file, she wouldn’t be standing up for her anymore.

Not even if she and Julian were still married, because a thing like that damaged the Weston Group itself.

Nora kept her fingers moving, steady and even. “I won’t do anything that damages the Westons. That includes taking the file last night. My conscience is clear on it.

“I didn’t push last night, and that was for your sake. I understand that you’re an old woman who wants Julian to live. But…”

She stopped there for a second, and then her voice cooled. “That’s once. If there’s a next time, I won’t be gentle about it. I’m not somebody who puts up with things.

“Especially not for a man I’m going to divorce.”

She said it without backing down and without pushing, and it left something complicated on Constance’s face.

Nora gave her temples two more passes and took her hands away. “That’s done. Have Bess bring the oil from my room. I’ll go and sit with my father.”

Once she was gone, Constance let out a long breath.

Bess looked at how guilty she still seemed. “There’s nothing for you to feel guilty about. Mrs. Weston was the one in the wrong last night.

“A project worth that much, and she walked off with it as if it were nothing, and Mr. Weston covered for her. You never said a word against her and defended her in front of her own family. If she still has complaints, she doesn’t know a kindness when she gets one.”

The headache had let go, and sleep was coming up on Constance. “Enough. Leave her alone.”

Bess kept going. “Ms. Blithe is such a good girl, raised right in front of you, and with Dr. Blithe behind her. You know everything there is to know about that family, and she can treat Mr. Weston. She’s the right match for him.”

Constance glanced at her, lay down half asleep, and waved her out. “Being right for him doesn’t matter. Julian has to want her.”

And Julian wanting anyone did no good at all, not with his life running out. None of it would last.

Why can’t anything in this world work out both ways?

Bess turned the light off and came out, and then she looked at Nora’s door. “I have no idea what’s so special about Mrs. Weston. Ma’am and Mr. Weston both take her side, when Ms. Blithe is clearly the better one.”
