Nora pulled in a breath, let her eyes drop for a second below his belt, and gave him a look that wasn’t impressed.

Nora had to jog to keep up. “Relax. The dogs I’ve seen are bigger than you. I’m really not interested!”

Then, she decided she’d gotten off track and went serious again. “Ryder, I’m not trying to scare you. Somebody really has been at your car. Pull out of the race, or change cars.”

The way she talked had actually caught his interest, and what she said had made him angrier.

“My car has been checked. There’s nothing wrong with it. You think I’d doubt the crew I’ve been through hell with and believe some crude old woman instead?”

Ryder wasn’t going to believe her. His crew had been through hell with him on a track more than once.

They were brothers to him, and he trusted them.

Whatever she said, he wasn’t buying any of it, and he walked toward his car faster.

The fans saw him and started waving and shouting.

One of his crew called out too. “Ryder, hurry up. We’re about to start.”

Nora couldn’t get through to him, so she tried something else. “Fine. Don’t pull out and don’t change cars. I’ll ride in the passenger seat with you.”

Ryder stopped and looked down at her. “You are something else, lady. All this talk. Is it money you want, or

me?”

“I’m doing this for your-”

Something warm landed on her forehead instead and stayed there for a second.

She looked up at him, thrown, and his mouth had only just left her forehead. He looked down at her, all trouble. “As requested. A kiss for luck.”

“Luck my ass!”

She was still staring when her hand came up and landed on his face, fast and dead on target.

The crack of it carried, and the whole screaming crowd went quiet and stared at Nora, then at Ryder.

The blow had knocked his head sideways, and the chestnut hair over his forehead shook.

He pushed his tongue into his cheek. The side of his face burned.

Ryder lifted his head slowly, and there was something dark underneath the look, but the smile on it went wilder. “Not bad. You’re the first woman who’s ever hit me. That’s my lucky charm all right. You’ve got nerve, and I like it!”

“You’re insane,” Nora said.

Ryder turned to his fans and smiled at them. “Do me a favor and look after my lucky charm. When the race is over, I’m going to ask her out.”

Then, he turned and walked off.

Nora still wanted to stop him from racing, and she reached for him. “Ryder-”

Her hand was barely out before a girl in the crowd knocked it down. “Ryder’s about to race. Let us take good care of you, lucky charm!

“Come on, everyone. Let’s take the lucky charm over there and look after her.”

Nora heard what was under the sweetness, saw them trying to steer her toward the restrooms, and knew exactly what they had in mind.

She wasn’t about to walk off with them, so she found a way to slip loose, then rented a racing suit and a white Ferrari.

Once she was ready, she walked over to the track and looked at the red Ferrari lined up in Ryder’s lane. “If you weren’t useful to me, I wouldn’t bother saving you!”

Nora got in and buckled the harness.

The horn went, and the engines came up all along the line.

Ryder took the red Ferrari off the line like a shot.

The race was on.

Cars in every color came off the line hard, chasing each other front and back and side to side, and it was vicious.
