Chapter 138 A Bet Is a Bet
en, he put his foot flat and drove the black car straight at Nora’s with everything he had!
A hit like that would put the white Ferrari into the air, and this time she’d be the one who died!
Ryder watched it coming, and his heart went up into his throat. “Old lady…”
He didn’t finish. The white Ferrari came up onto its two left wheels and stood there on its side, and the black car coming at it skidded underneath and went off into nothing.
The black car went off the cliff, and the crash of it came back up from below.
Nora’s car came down out of its tilt, and she put her foot down, and the white Ferrari went past in a streak and was gone.
Jonah stared after it. “Holy shit. That was insane. She’s better than you are!”

Ryder had nearly gone off the mountain, and he looked back at the wreck behind them. “We almost died. Save the compliments. Let’s get back and take a look at Dean and those drivers.”
A race still had to be kept safe, and once the attempt had failed the killers weren’t about to keep coming at him out in the open.
Twenty minutes later, Nora reached the top, parked out of the way, got out of the racing suit, bought a bottle of water, and sat down at the overlook to watch the lights below.
Then, she waited for Ryder.
“Old lady, I had no idea you could drive like that.”
Nora heard that voice and threw the bottle straight at him. “Do you have any manners at all? Is that how you talk to the person who saved your life?”
She wasn’t actually that good behind a wheel. She’d learned in her previous life to get away from Adrian and the way he kept her, and then she’d driven for her life enough times to get very good at it.
Ryder caught the bottle and sat down across from her. “I don’t even know your name.”
“Then ask. Or you can call me ma’am.”
Ryder looked at her, at a face that looked younger than his own, and thought about the way she’d thrown her own car in to save him, and his pulse picked up. He turned his head away. “I’m not calling you ma’am.”
Nora laughed. “A bet’s a bet. You said if you lost you’d work for me, and don’t forget I saved your life on top
of it!”
She held up a fist. “Call me an old lady one more time and I’ll knock your teeth out!”
Ryder looked at that small fist, which he could close one hand around, and found nothing threatening about it.
But he put on a face that said otherwise. “Fine. Ma’am it is.”

Then came the real question. “So how did you know somebody got to my car, ma’am? How did you know
mebody wanted me dead?”
Nora kept it vague. “I happened to see and hear something. The point is I saved you, so you work for me.”
Ryder didn’t buy an answer like that, but she had saved him.
There were two ways to read it. One was that she was genuinely decent and had thrown herself at it to save
stranger.
The other was that his uncle had sent her, that the whole thing on the track was a performance, and that all of it was built to win his trust and get him to fall for her.
Ryder leaned toward the second one, and he asked her anyway. “We don’t know each other at all. Why would you risk that much to save me?”
Nora told him exactly what she wanted. “I’m short on people, and you fit. I saved you, so you can work for me and do things for me.”
That wasn’t on either of his lists, and he looked at her, not believing it. “Do what, exactly?”
If she were his uncle’s, the ask would have been marriage, or at least a relationship.
Nora looked up at him. “Help me set something up. I want to split my father and my stepmother, break the marriage, and get the two of them tearing at each other.
“I have the plan worked out. All you have to do is find me the right people to get close to them.”
That surprised him again. “That’s it?”
“That’s it for now. When I need something else, I’ll tell you.” Nora looked at him. “You’re not going to go back on it, are you?”
If he hadn’t run his mouth calling her an old lady, she wouldn’t have insisted on him working for her. She’d have sat down and talked about a partnership.
She had things she could do for him either way.
Ryder looked at her for a moment, then nodded. “A bet’s a bet. Send me the details, and give me a number.”
Nora traded numbers with him and added him. “The sooner this happens, the better.”
Ryder nodded, then leaned in closer. “Ma’am, you’re not giving me work as an excuse to chase me, are you?”
Nora gave him a flat look. “Drink more water, go take a long piss, and get a good look at yourself in it. That dye job is not my type. I’m going.”
Ryder watched her walk away. “Ma’am, you’re my type.”
Nora had nothing to say to that.
What a self-obsessed little brat. Nothing like the man he turns into.
