Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 151

Chapter 151 The Favor She Asked

Before she left, Nora walked Sabrina over to the pool for one last look at Gus.

Gus was on his third cake, his face screwed up like he would rather be dead. He had already forced down two, and every few bites he gagged and had to stop.

Then, he felt eyes on him and looked up, straight into Nora’s cold stare. He flinched, scooped up a huge bite, and shoveled it in.

“Let’s go,” Nora said, and led Sabrina and Bridget out of Seacliff Lodge. Outside the main doors, she turned to Bridget. “You two wait for me in the car. I left something behind.”

Nora went back inside to the front desk. “Hi. Could I get a copy of the security footage from the pool?”

The clerk gave her a polite, practiced smile. “I’m sorry, ma’am. We’re not allowed to release footage.”

Nora frowned. “Give me one second.” She stepped off to the side and called Julian.

Julian was in a meeting with Quentin Oakes, a client who had flown in from overseas. When Nora’s name came up on his screen, the corner of his mouth lifted. “Sorry. I need to take this.”

He didn’t bother stepping away from the table, either. “Done for the day?”

Nora kept her eyes on the front desk. “Not yet. I need a favor, if it’s not too much trouble.”

Nora never asked him for anything, so something had to be wrong.

Julian’s brows drew together. “We’re married, Nora. You don’t have to ask me like that. Whatever it is, if I can do it, say it.”

“Seacliff Lodge is one of the Weston Group’s properties,” she said. “I want a copy of the security footage and they won’t hand it over. Can you get it for me?”

“Done.” Julian didn’t hesitate, and his voice dropped. “But next time, Mrs. Weston, just tell me. If my own wife has to be polite about something this small, it makes me feel useless.”

Nora could picture the look on his face, dead serious and a little put out, and it made her smile. “Okay.”

Then, she added, “Have Miles call them, and don’t tell anyone we’re married.” Otherwise she would have Constance to answer to.

Julian frowned, but in the end he told Miles to take care of it.

Quentin smiled at him. “Your wife?”

Julian nodded. “She is.”

“She makes you happy,” Quentin said. “You love her very much.”

Saying it out loud to an outsider put Julian in an unusually good mood. “I do. She’s brilliant, she’s beautiful, and there’s nobody else quite like her.”

For a while, the conversation stayed on Nora. He told Quentin she knew more about medicine than arryone he had ever met, that he owed his health to her, that she was the reason he wanted to be alive at all.

By the end of it, Quentin had a picture of a near-perfect woman, and he was genuinely curious about her.

When the meeting broke up, he stopped at the door. “I hope that one day I get to meet this brilliant, beautiful wife of yours.”

“Next time,” Julian said, “I’ll bring her.”

Once Quentin was gone, Miles called the hotel, and while he had them on the line, he pulled a second copy of the footage.

“Mr. Weston, Mrs. Weston asked for the pool footage from Seacliff Lodge,” he said. “I pulled a copy for you as well. It’s in your inbox.”

A good assistant didn’t wait to be asked. Miles knew what Julian wanted and had it in front of him before the question came.

He had already trimmed the video down to what mattered, starting from the moment Nora walked in.

Then, Julian got to the part where Gus told her to go find a rich man and spread her legs for him, and his brows pulled into a hard line.

It wasn’t until she kicked Gus into the pool that his face eased.

Even so, it wasn’t enough. He glanced at Miles. “Find out everything there is to know about Gus Merrick. And I don’t want to see his name in this industry again.”

Miles blinked. That was a blacklisting, plain and simple.

Nora had no idea any of that was happening. She got her copy of the footage and left Seacliff Lodge.

One of the servers watched her go, then leaned over to the coworker next to her. “I went to school with her. Must be nice, being pretty. She was dirt poor back then, and now she’s eating here and hanging off some rich guy.

“And that guy she was having lunch with looked familiar. I swear I’ve seen him somewhere.

“Good thing I took a picture. I’ll ask around our class later.”

Nora never noticed she had run into somebody from school. She dropped Sabrina at the hospital for a checkup, and once she saw how close she was to the Weston Group, she skipped the office, since she and Julian were having dinner anyway.

Instead, she drove to the Weston Group tower and parked at the curb.

Close to the end of the day, she called Julian, and he picked up on the first ring. “Are you finished?”

He paused the meeting and glanced at the time. It was barely five. “Hungry?”

“No. I had something near your office, so I didn’t go back in. I’ll wait until you’re done.”

Julian raised an eyebrow. “Mrs. Weston came all the way out to pick me up?”
