tor kept that to himself and made a show of being even-handed. “Did you have lunch with Adrian today

or not?”

He pulled out his phone and held a photo up in front of her. “Don’t bother denying it. I have proof.”

Mandy shot her a hateful look. “You can never leave well enough alone. You want one on each/arm, so you went after Ace!”

Nora took the phone and barely looked at it. She didn’t bother asking where the picture had come from. just zoomed in and handed it back. “That was a work lunch. Staff from both companies were at the table. I wasn’t alone with him.”

Victor took the phone back, and in the blown-up photo he could see Sabrina and the rest of them at the next table.

Victor glanced at Mandy and then back across the table. “If it wasn’t a private lunch, why didn’t you say so this afternoon?”

Nora smiled again. “Mandy hung up on me. And that job? She signed the contract for it herself.”

Mandy caught sight of Sabrina in the picture. “You and Ace were talking about Sabrina’s campaign?”

Nora answered her, still smiling. “That’s right. Everstone Jewelers belongs to Adrian’s group, so we reworked the whole deal today. Sabrina gets $3,000,000 for the campaign, a new ad team, and the penalty clause comes down to double.”

If the deal fell apart now, the payout came to double, $6,000,000, instead of the tenfold penalty the old contract called for.

Mandy’s head swam. “Since when does Ace own Everstone? How are the two of you working together?”

Everstone was headed for a disaster, and when it hit, Sabrina was going down with it.

But now, of all people, Adrian had taken the company over.

Nora took her time enjoying the color draining out of Mandy’s face. “You signed that contract yourself.”

In her last life, the Pierces hadn’t owned Everstone when she married Adrian, and she had never paid the company much attention, so she had no idea what was coming for it.

But that reaction told her enough. Something in that company was going to blow.

Mandy shot to her feet. “Nora!”

Nora looked up at her, unbothered. “You signed it. The company is Adrian’s. If Sabrina blows up and Everstone loses money on her, who do you think he blames? Who do you think the Pierces blame?”

Mandy’s face changed. Nothing could happen to Sabrina now. Nothing could happen to Everstone either.

So she hadn’t trapped Nora at all. Now, she would have to keep Sabrina safe and hand her a better life than the one she had lived the first time around.

Mandy’s jaw locked. No. This isn’t what I came back for. I’m not swallowing this.

Fine

She still wanted leverage, so she tried a different angle. “You talked Ace into dumping me, so whatever happens to him is your problem now, not mine.”

“Is that right?” Nora said.

Yvette watched Mandy’s face working and guessed there was something underneath all of it. “Why would you talk Adrian out of it? Once Mandy is married, the two of you could look out for each other.”

Victor had felt himself losing ground a minute ago, and he jumped on this. “Fine. I can understand a work lunch with Adrian. But you told him to break up with Mandy. Am I wrong about that?”

“You’re not,” Nora said.

Victor had finally caught her at something, and the stern father came right back out. “Yvette is right. Mandy marrying Adrian does nothing but help you. Why would you push them apart? That was wrong and you know it. Apologize to Mandy and we can put this behind us.”

Nora had pushed Adrian into it on purpose. Half of it was the pleasure of watching Mandy’s face. The other half was timing, because those two were crawling toward a wedding, and a breakup and a screaming fight might push them to the altar sooner, which would take a lot off her mind.

She let out a small laugh. “Mandy tore up the Peregrine. She screamed at Adrian about breaking up. She called me a bitch to my face in front of Julian. If I hadn’t told Adrian to end it, if I hadn’t put her in her place…”

She looked up at Victor, still smiling. “Do you think the Peregrine’s owner was going to let that go? Do you think Adrian wouldn’t have dumped her anyway? And Julian. Does he believe her and divorce me, or does he not believe her and take it out on this family?”

The questions came one after another, and his face darkened with every one of them.

Nobody in this city crossed the owner of the Peregrine, and after a scene like that, anybody could see Adrian was going to end things regardless.

As for Julian, there was no version of it that ended well.

Nora watched his face go darker and took her time. “Julian knew you wouldn’t believe me. He wanted to come here and stand behind me, but I told him this was family business and kept him home.

“But Dad, I’m a Weston now. You call me a liar, you dress me down, and now you want me to apologize to your illegitimate daughter. Are you telling me she outranks me?
