Chapter 158 A Blacklist and a Slap

Rht then, Victor’s phone buzzed. The name on the screen was the Peregrine, and he opened the message fast.
The restaurant had written, “Good evening, Mr. Sinclair. Your daughter Mandy Sinclair caused a disturbance at the Peregrine tonight and disrupted other guests, who have filed complaints. Mandy Sinclair, you, and your wife have been permanently added to our blacklist. Thank you for your understanding.”
The pulse in Victor’s temple started jumping.
It was a polite little message, and on the face of it, nothing worse than a blacklist notice. He had never had the standing to get a table there anyway. But this wasn’t about whether he could eat at the Peregrine.
Everybody who ate in that dining room had money or a name, and Mandy had wrecked their evening badly enough that they complained as a group, which was what put the Sinclairs on the list.
From then on, every time he sat down to talk business, the other side would know whose daughter she was and that she had insulted everyone who mattered in this city. Few people would risk doing business with him after that.
It amounted to being frozen out of every deal in town, and it would bankrupt him.
Nora studied Victor, who looked ready to come apart, and glanced at the phone in his hand. Whatever that message said, it had gotten to him.
Mandy had no idea what was coming and kept running her mouth. “She’s poison. She’d never get the Westons to lift a finger for you, and on top of that she isn’t even-”
Victor swung his hand and caught her across the face.
“Agh!” Mandy screamed and stumbled backward, and she almost hit the floor.
Yvette grabbed her and turned on him. “Can’t you use your words for once? All you ever do is hit her. She hasn’t even healed from the last time.”
Victor stared her down. “You’re her mother. Look at what you’ve raised. No respect for anyone, no filter on her mouth. Keep going like this and she’ll be the death of me.”
Yvette looked at the swelling coming up on half of Mandy’s face and the blood at the corner of her mouth, and her temper went through the ceiling.
“This is on Nora. If she hadn’t gone to lunch with Mandy’s boyfriend, none of it would have happened.
“You don’t say a word to her, you hit your own daughter instead. There’s favoring someone and then there’s this. You know better than anyone whether she’s worth it.”
Nora’s brows drew together. There was something buried in that last line.
Victor’s voice climbed. “Mandy comes to me with a story and I drag Nora home and tear into her without asking a single question. Who exactly am I favoring?”
He jabbed a finger in her face. “Try using your head for once. You never figured anything out in your life

and now you’ve raised her just as stupid. The pair of you are idiots, and all you do is drag me down with
you.”
Yvette slapped his hand away. “That isn’t favoring her, that’s groveling. You’re her lapdog. You only kiss up to
her because she married a Weston.
“Think hard about who’s going to take care of you when you’re old, Victor. Keep shielding her and putting your hands on Mandy, and I swear I’ll-”
Victor cut her off. “Shut your mouth!”
Yvette flinched at the volume and caught herself, and what came out wasn’t what she had started to say “I’ll make sure Mandy never takes care of you! Once she marries Adrian, don’t come begging her for anything!”
Then, she took Mandy by the arm and pulled her up the stairs.
It was the second time Mandy had watched her parents go at each other, and this one was worse than the last. It scared her.
Nora kept her eyes down and let the corner of her mouth lift.
There they go again, tearing into each other. Worse than last time, too. And half of what just came out of their mouths means something.
Nora couldn’t work out what it meant yet, and the moment was too good to waste.
