Chapter 159 His New Secretary
gave a short, cold laugh. “That idiot knows how to do one thing, and that’s make messes for you. She’ll burn through everything you own. It’s only a question of when.”
Then, she walked out with her bag and left Victor sitting there, furious.
Clyde Tate, the butler who ran the Sinclair house, watched her go. “How can Mrs. Weston be that cold, sir? Does getting married mean she isn’t your daughter anymore?”
He let out a long sigh and went on, mostly to himself. “Once daughters marry, they forget about their fathers. I have a cousin with two girls. Both of them married and neither one looks after him. He was sick and neither one came by. Thank God he had a son to take care of him at the end.”
Victor’s brow twitched.
Out in the courtyard, Nora had just opened her car door when an engine came up the drive, and she looked
over.
The car stopped beside hers, and a woman got out in a sharp tailored suit, polished and professional, with figure that turned heads.
“Mrs. Weston.” She smiled and dipped her head. “I’m Kendra Ashford, your father’s secretary. Something urgent came up and I need to see him.”
Nora took in the practiced softness in her eyes and nodded back. “He’s still up.”
Kendra Ashford nodded and went inside, hips swinging with every step.
Nora raised a brow, got into her car, and checked her phone. Ryder had texted, “Well? Custom built for him.”
Kendra had been picked out for Victor down to the last detail.
Nora wrote back, “Looking forward to the results.”
She glanced at the lit windows of the living room, started the car, and drove off.
Inside, Kendra stood in front of Victor. “Mr. Sinclair, Highpoint Capital called. They’re pulling their funding
tomorrow.”
Victor frowned at her. “Everything was fine with them. Why would they pull out now?”
For a company his size, losing that investment cut off the cash it needed to keep running. Nothing in the pipeline could get off the ground, and the losses would run deeper than he wanted to count.
Kendra asked, “Have you had a run-in with anyone over there lately?”
Victor shook his head, and then the message from the Peregrine came back to him. This was Mandy. It had to be.
His jaw clenched. “If that money walks, I swear I’ll break Mandy’s legs.”

Chapter 150 His New Secretary
Kendra stood where she was, as if she hadn’t heard a word of it.
F
or called Desmond Kirby, who ran Highpoint, and nobody picked up. He tried a few more numbers fr that and couldn’t get hold of anyone.
Angry and cornered, he looked around the room until his eye landed on the belt hanging on the hook by the stairs. He crossed the floor, yanked it down, and went up.
Kendra watched him go without a word, then picked up her own phone and made a call.
Upstairs, Mandy sat on the edge of her bed and cried to Yvette. “Dad takes her side more every day. I’m the one who got hurt and he hit me over Nora.
“It used to be that I could hit her and all he did was yell at her for setting me off. He said she had it coming And now…
“He doesn’t love me anymore. I’m his real daughter, and he hit me over her, and he hit me that hard…”
Yvette pressed an ice pack to her cheek. “That’s because she married Julian. If you had been the one to marry him, Nora would be crawling to us right now.
“That marriage was yours. You picked Adrian instead. You said he’d be the richest man in the country one day. What good does one day do you when he’s breaking up with you now?”
Mandy sobbed harder. “Nora put him up to it. She’s a slut, that’s all she is. She has Julian and she still went after Adrian. Bitch. Bitch! Why won’t she just die!
“If I’d known Julian was going to live, I never would have let her marry him. I’d have handed her to some fat old man who likes hurting women in bed.”
Mandy grabbed Yvette’s hand, and her face was vicious when she looked up. “Mom, I want Nora gone. Off this earth.”
Mandy’s words hit home, and Yvette pressed the ice pack down hard enough to make her cry out. “Ow! Mom, easy! That hurts!”
The pressure stayed right where it was. “Good. It should hurt. Don’t you ever think like that again. It’s against the law.”
Tears came up in Mandy’s eyes. “I’m just angry. I was only thinking it.”
Yvette wasn’t having it. “Don’t even think about it. An idea like that is dangerous. You think making someone disappear ends the problem? It traps you for the rest of your life. You stop eating, you stop sleeping, you wait for the day it all comes out. It would ruin you.”
Mandy’s mouth twisted. “She’s the one who comes after me, and she’s the reason Dad hit me. If he keeps taking her side, he can forget about any help from me once I marry Ace. He can forget about me taking care of him too, unless he signs everything over to me.”
