Chapter 167 Gus Makes a Call

Bridget kept going. “Every actress who works with him gets something out of it. Even the ones who don’t blow up come out of it with a name people recognize.

“His finances have never raised a red flag. Any time there’s a disaster somewhere, the two of them put in $5,000,000 or more. You can’t build a better reputation than that.

“For a nobody like Sabrina, getting to work with him is the kind of luck most people never see.

Nora gave her a flat “Mm” and nothing else.

An hour later, the shoot wrapped.

Sabrina came straight over, still glowing. “That’s a wrap, Ms. Sinclair. Are we heading back to the office?”

Preston walked over too. “Now that we’re finished, I’ve booked a restaurant for the whole crew. Come with us, Ms. Sinclair.”

Nora thought about it and didn’t say no. “All right.”

She led the way out of the agency with Preston and Sabrina, and the rest of the crew came streaming along behind them.

Preston opened the car door for her and put a hand on the frame so she wouldn’t hit her head.

Gus had just come out of a job interview, and he stood there staring while Nora left with everybody circling around her.

Gus’s friend gave him an uncomfortable look. “It isn’t that I won’t help you. You crossed somebody, and now everybody in this industry knows your name. Any company that hires you is asking for trouble.

“Think about who you went after and how big it was. One place interviewed you and lost a client the same week. Who’s going to risk that?

“In this city, in this business, there’s no decent job at decent pay waiting for you. Change careers or leave

town.

“And don’t call me again. I’m not going down with you.”

Gus stood there stunned, then jabbed a finger at the car pulling away. “It’s her!”

Nora was the only person he had crossed in months.

Three days of it had nearly finished him. He had eaten 11 cakes, put away seven bottles of wine, spent six hours in that pool, and landed in a hospital bed for seven days afterward.

Everything went wrong after that. Over $1,000,000 went out the door, he lost his job, the mortgage went unpaid, his wife started pushing for a divorce, and now nobody would hire him.

Most companies wouldn’t even give him an interview, and the private shoots he picked up online kept getting canceled with no explanation.

Chapter 167 Gus Makes a Call

Gus had gotten desperate enough to apply as a camera operator for a porn outfit, and the second they heard his name they waved him off.

It ally landed on him. The whole industry had shut him out.

Gus watched her car disappear down the street. Then, he took out his phone and made a call.

“Mandy, you told me Nora runs a small company and has nobody standing behind her.

“So why am I blacklisted across this entire industry for going after Sabrina?

“You said if I did it right, Adrian Pierce would take care of me. How did it end up like this?

“I can’t work in this city anymore. You’re going to answer for that.”

The line had barely connected before all of it came out of him.

Mandy had been raw for days over the silence between her and Adrian, and she yelled straight back. “How is any of that my problem? Nora’s the one who did it to you!

“How was I supposed to know you were that useless? You couldn’t even push around a nobody without getting caught in the act.”

Gus’s teeth ground together. “Fix this and cover the $1,000,000 I’ve lost, or I go public with who put me up to all of it. If I’m going down, so are you.”

“You’re out of your mind. Try it and I’ll have Adrian—”

Yvette took the phone out of her hand before she could finish.

“Mr. Merrick, this is a small thing and an easy one to fix. There’s no reason to do anything drastic. Let me give you an idea that will put you back on your feet.”

Gus wasn’t sure he believed her. “Yeah?”

Yvette was smiling. “Of course. I’ll cover the $1,000,000 you lost on top of it. And you’d get to pay Nora back for all of it. Doesn’t that sound good?”

Gus still had doubts, but the offer was hard to turn down, and he was out of options.

So he took it. “Fine. What do I do?”

At the restaurant, drinks went around the table and everyone relaxed.

Nora watched Preston all night. He kept the room going and carried none of the arrogance his awards entitled him to. He looked after people, left nobody out, and knew the name of every junior assistant at the table.

He didn’t push drinks on anyone either, and when somebody else tried, he stepped in and shut it down. Sitting near him was comfortable.

Down at the other end, Sabrina and the young women around her looked at him the way fans look at a
