you’re serious about it, send the script to my office during business hours. We can sit down then and see whether there’s a deal worth making.”

There was no crack in that answer to push at, and Preston smiled. “That works.”

Sabrina had expected her to grab an opening like that without blinking, and all the hope drained out of her face.

Sabrina pouted and didn’t bother to hide it.

Preston turned to her with an easy smile. “I believe in you. I’ll have the script sent over to your office tomorrow, and once your boss reads it, I think she’ll sign.”

The gloom lifted off Sabrina at once, and she nodded with her eyes shining.

Nora watched it happen, and her brows drew together.

Toward the end of the night, she went to the restroom.

Bridget followed her in. “You don’t seem to want this deal, Ms. Sinclair.”

Nora wasn’t going to say Preston’s name out loud in there, in case the wrong ears caught it.

She washed her hands. “We wait for the script. Acting carries risk, and who she works opposite matters. A famous name isn’t a reason to say yes on the spot.”

Mostly it came down to Mandy, who couldn’t stand to watch her do well and had still been the one to put Sabrina in a campaign next to Preston. Something in that didn’t add up.

Nora had to be more careful than usual, because she couldn’t afford to fall into whatever hole was being dug for her, and that was why she kept her guard up with him.

Bridget saw the sense in it. “You’re right. I got ahead of myself. It looked like a great opening and I didn’t want to lose it.”

A lead role opposite him would save Sabrina 10 years of clawing her way up and make her famous overnight. She wanted it badly herself, and she knew Sabrina wanted it more.

Nora smiled. “We weigh the risk first. I may not take this deal at all, so start getting Sabrina ready for that, or it’ll hit her hard later.”

Losing a shot like that turned into resentment easily enough, and resentment always found somebody to

land on.

They came out of the restroom together. “I understand,” Bridget said. “Sabrina listens, though. She’s simple and sweet that way.”

The two of them kept talking as they headed back toward their private room.

“Wren Calloway.”

The name stopped Nora where she stood, and she looked down into the main dining room below.

was down there. So was Fiona, at a long table full of people who all looked like money.

Nora frowned and dropped her voice. “Something’s come up. Take Sabrina home and don’t wait for me.”

Bridget gave her a puzzled look, said all right, and went.

Nora stayed in the corridor and watched.

Wren had a delivery vest on and a sealed bag in one hand.

She was standing in front of Fiona, who had a man sitting next to her.

Nora knew him from her last life, from parties she had gone to with Adrian. His name was Ian Granger.

Ian was talking at Wren. “You’re the delivery girl. We want to inspect the order. That isn’t a problem, is it?

Wren shook her head. “It isn’t a problem, but-”

Ian talked over her. “Then open it. I’m not signing for anything until I know what’s inside.

“Otherwise none of us are touching it. For all I know you hate rich people and you’ve done something to it.”

Wren answered fast. “I haven’t. The bag is still sealed. You can see that for yourself.”

Ian lifted his chin. “If it doesn’t get opened, we’re not comfortable using it. I’ll request a refund. And file a complaint, come to think of it.”

Wren’s calm slipped. “Sir, this order can’t be refunded. I delivered it on time. You can’t file a complaint against me.”

The order came to $3,000. If he pushed a refund through, the store wouldn’t take the goods back, which left her paying for it out of her own pocket.

Wren had nothing in her account and couldn’t cover it, and a complaint would cost her another $200 on top of that.

Crossing a table like this one could cost her the job altogether.

Wren’s panic made lan smile. “What’s in the bag? Go on, say it.”

Wren’s face went red. Saying the word condoms in front of that many people was more than she could do.

There was something about a beautiful woman going red and shrinking into herself. It made a man want to push.

“You don’t want to open it and you don’t want the complaint. Fine. I saw that you know Fiona. Beg her. Maybe I sign for it as a favor to her.”

Wren pressed her lips together and looked up at Fiona. This was her husband’s first love, the reason the two of them were getting divorced, and the one who had taken her marriage apart.

And now I’m supposed to beg her.
