Chapter 181 The Blood Report

“Oh.” Nora drew the word out, thick with sarcasm. “So the great healer of the next generation hasn’t learned her trade yet, and mistook an appetite remedy for poison.

“And then your grandmother, to make your diagnosis come true, had somebody dose him with larkspur, which does to a body exactly what blackroot does, and hung it on me.”

“That isn’t what happened!” Olivia shouted.

Nora laughed. “That isn’t all of it either. She worked the ghostbloom in so you could play mistress and get into my husband’s bed. Am I close?”

Olivia went red and lost hold of herself. “I have never done a thing to you. Keep your mouth clean when you talk about me.”

“Read me page three, line four,” Nora said.

Olivia turned to page three and ran a finger down to the fourth line. The color drained out of her face, and her fingertip started to shake.

“What now? Did your training fail you again?”

Olivia met her eyes and thought, for the first time, that Nora had been right. She should have walked out with her grandmother instead of staying.

Staying had earned her nothing but this.

Olivia looked at Julian, then at Constance, then even at Sienna, who followed her around like a shadow most days. Not one of them said a word for her.

Her eyes filled, and under the weight of Nora’s stare she forced it out through her teeth. “A spike in hormones.”

She put it as delicately as she could.

Nora wasn’t letting her have that. “No need to be delicate, and no need for the clinical wording. None of us here are doctors. Say it plainly.”

Something in her broke. “It means a man’s sex drive goes through the roof,” she shouted.

“Larkspur and ghostbloom together, once the poison is cleared, leave him wanting it that badly.

“Have you humiliated me enough yet, Nora?”

Olivia turned and ran, and from the way her hand came up to her face, she was crying on the way out.

Nora raised her voice after her, with no mercy in it at all. “An educated woman from a medical family shouldn’t be throwing herself at a married man, Ms. Blithe. The next round won’t look anything like today.”

That made her run faster, and she missed a step and went down face first.

Sienna shot Nora a look and took off after her. “Olivia, wait!”

Nobody had ever driven Olivia Blithe out of a room in tears before, because nobody was willing to cross a family like hers.

Tea Weston spoke first. “Nora, do you have medical training? Did you clear the poison yourself? Does that mean he isn’t going to die?”

Marlene Weston laughed. “He married well, didn’t he? First Olivia, now Nora. The next time a rumor goes around that he’s dying of poison, none of us has to worry at all.”

It sounded like concern for him and praise for her. Both of them were fishing, one for how close he was to dying, the other for whether Nora really knew medicine.

Nora answered without any weight in her voice. “You heard Olivia. This particular poison doesn’t take medical training. Two people in a bed clears it right up.”

Her wrap slid down as she said it, and both arms came into view covered in marks that left very little to

guess at.

Tessa and Marlene looked at each other, both of them running back through what Olivia had actually said and deciding that must have been it.

Constance’s voice dropped. “We had an incident today. I never expected anybody to be bold enough to bring poison into this house. I intend to find out who did.”

Constance kept going. “And you can all rest easy. Julian is in good health, and today was an accident. We’ve fallen short as hosts, so there’s a small gift for each of you on the way out, and we’ll do this properly another

time.”

It told them he was fine and not dying, and it told then to go home.

They filed out with their own thoughts. Tessa and Marlene wanted to stay and watch how it played out, and they had to leave with everybody else.

The moment the last guest was gone, Julian stopped holding himself upright and sagged against Nora.

Six foot two of him came down all at once and nearly took her to the floor with him.

Nora braced and held him up. “Stand up. Stop playing dead. You’re not that far gone.”

Julian got weaker on purpose. “The rest of it is still in me. I’ll need my wife’s help.”

Color came up in her face. “Keep talking and I’ll put a few needles in you and you won’t get it up for a month.”
