Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 190

Chapter 190 She Takes the Scalpel

Aoctor in a white coat came down the corridor toward Nora, moving fast.

The nurse hurried over to meet her. “Dr. Sutter, the family is being unreasonable. She won’t signy.”

Nora looked at her. “Are you the doctor handling Wren Calloway?”

Finnsned

Elaine Sutter nodded. “I’m her surgeon. The patient is critical. If you have questions, they can wait unti afterward.”

“I want to know why she needs a hysterectomy,” Nora said. “She’s healthy, and heavy bleeding on its own doesn’t cost a woman her uterus.”

The nurse leaned in and said something against Elaine’s ear, too low for anybody else to catch.

Nora scoffed. “Is it that shameful? You have to whisper it?”

Elaine frowned. “Go get her chart and her results and let her see them.”

The nurse went in, came back out, and handed over the chart and the test results.

Elaine explained it on the assumption that none of it would mean anything to her. “The patient has severe fibroids on top of an ectopic pregnancy with heavy bleeding. That’s why the uterus has to come out.

“We’re doctors. The last thing any of us wants is to lose a patient. Trust us.”

Nora read the results. On paper, the fibroids were severe.

Except that she read them twice, and then she laughed. “These aren’t her results.”

That made Elaine angry. “Her name is printed right there. Of course they’re hers. If you came here to make trouble-”

Nora put a finger on the scan and cut her off. “This uterine wall isn’t smooth. That’s three terminations at least. Look at the cervix. Whoever this is has delivered two children, and she’s past 35.

“My cousin is 25 and this is her first pregnancy. How is that her ultrasound?”

Elaine stared at her. “You’re an OB too?”

Better than most, apparently, because none of that would have come off a single scan for anybody else in the field.

Nora didn’t answer the question. “I don’t have time for small talk. She gets scanned again. I’m not signing this.”

The nurse spoke up. “Those results are hers. If you don’t trust our doctors, take her to another hospital.”

Nora turned a cold look on her, and the nurse shut her mouth.

Elaine kept her voice serious. “The ectopic pregnancy and the bleeding are real. She came in late as it is. There’s no time to move her.

“None of us want to lose her. Trust my training.”

“Sorry,” Nora said. “I don’t gamble with my own family.”

“Then what do you want?” Elaine was losing patience.

སྙམ། Finished

Nora knew how tight the window was. Drag this out much longer and Wren wouldn’t only lose her uterus, she would lose her life.

“I’ll do the surgery.”

“You?” Elaine didn’t bother hiding the doubt.

“I’ll do it,” Nora said. “Whatever happens afterward is on me.”

Elaine turned her down flat. “Absolutely not. You don’t work here.”

Nora was finished arguing. “I operate, I don’t go public, and I don’t come after this hospital for handing me another woman’s scan. I’ll take the responsibility as a Weston.”

The Weston name changed her face.

“Let me call the director.”

Elaine stepped aside, made a short call, and turned back around. “He agrees. We record the whole thing on video, and you give us that guarantee.”

Nora didn’t hesitate. “Fine.”

She recorded a statement releasing the hospital from liability and followed Elaine through the doors.

Scrub, scrub again, sterile gown, and then she was standing at the table.

Word had come down from the director that somebody else would be operating, and the room still stared when she walked in, plenty of doubt in it.

Nora spared one look at Wren, white-faced with her eyes shut.

She put a hand on her abdomen and pressed. “The uterus hasn’t ruptured. There’s still time. We go laparoscopic.”

Everybody looked at Elaine.

Elaine nodded. “Do what she says.”

After that, the room followed Nora.

Elaine watched her work like somebody who had done it a hundred times. Suction, find the site, excise, close. Fast and clean from start to finish, and better than she could have managed herself.

Nobody in that room felt anything but respect.

Elaine followed her out. “Ms. Sinclair, which hospital are you with? That was remarkable. Bleeding like that
