Chapter 193 Waiting Outside the Building

Finished

Nora scrolled through a stack of platform notices, every one of them saying the video violated policy, had been removed, and could be edited and resubmitted.

She handed the tablet back. “Don’t panic. Keep the numbers ready to go. I’ll handle the rest.”

That calm settled Chloe down. She took a breath and got very serious about it. “Even if this bankrupts the company, I’m staying with you.”

Nora laughed in spite of herself. “If we go under there’s no job and no paycheck. What exactly would you be staying for?”

That stumped her for a second, and then it came out in a rush, afraid of being left behind. “I can do plenty. I’ll start over with you. A little studio somewhere. I’ll work five jobs at once and I don’t need a salary. Just don’t get rid of me.”

Chloe’s chin came up, stubborn about it. “I’m staying, and I’ll put my own savings into you. You’ll be back on top.”

It was hopelessly naive, and it warmed her anyway. Chloe was a college kid who hadn’t been knocked around by the world yet, loyal and grateful, ready to hand over a few thousand dollars of her own savings to put her boss back on top.

It was adorable.

Nora was smiling at her now. “If you’re handing over your savings, I owe you. I’m not getting rid of you. Stay where you are and stop worrying.”

Nora’s smile was so warm that Chloe lit up too. “Yes, Ms. Sinclair. I know you’ll fix it.”

Nora shook her head, laughing. “Go home.”

“A little longer. I want more of the numbers in place.” Chloe went straight back to her desk and took out her phone.

Nora told her again not to stay too late and went downstairs.

At her desk, Chloe had the phone against her ear. “Dad, I want my money back and I want it unfrozen. Right

now.

“I stopped studying computer science and I’m not hacking anything, so give me my money. I don’t need $100,000,000. $50,000,000 is fine.”

Whatever he said made her switch tactics. “Not one cent? All right, then you fix my boss’s problem, or I’m going out tonight and dating the first guy with face tattoos I can find.”

It took about 10 seconds to wear him down. “Don’t do that to me. I’ll arrange it. It won’t be fast. Probably tomorrow morning.”

Chloe laid it on thick. “Thank you, Daddy. I knew you were the best. I love you most. I’m going to work so

hard.”

Chloe’s father tried again. “When the internship is over, come home. It isn’t safe out there-”

odo your work, Dad. I have mine.” She cut him off sweetly and hung up.

Chloe was going to get her boss through this, whatever it took.

Nora knew none of that. She came out of the clevator into the lobby and saw the three girls with the cakes still outside, holding wine bottles now, taking selfies.

It didn’t strike her as strange. Everybody posted pictures of everything these days.

Nora gave them one look and kept moving toward the doors.

“Nora Sinclair!”

Somebody called her name before she was clear of the entrance, and the voice belonged to Adrian.

Nora watched him come toward her and frowned. “Mandy left the office hours ago. If you need her, try the house.”

Adrian looked her over, satisfied himself that she was fine, and said, “I’m not here for Mandy. I’m here for you. Do you want help?”

Nora looked past him. Julian had gotten out of the car and was striding toward them through the glow of the street lights.

Nora smiled, and a second later she put the smile away and turned a cool face on Adrian. “No. My problems are mine to solve.”

She went past him at a quick clip, heading for Julian.

Adrian kept pace with her. “We’re partners on a campaign. This isn’t only your problem. It isn’t charity either, it’s part of the work.”

Nora didn’t turn around. “Then you had even less reason to come down here and ask. Tell your people to handle it and show me the result. Instead you came so I’d have to ask you for it and owe you.”

“That isn’t what I meant.”

Adrian had come to see her. The rest was an excuse.

Nora didn’t care what he meant. She kept walking toward Julian.

“Nora Sinclair!”

Somebody spat her name out behind her.
