three girls bolted the second Julian turned toward them.

“Don’t move!”

He let go of Nora and went after them.

Nora looked up in time to see Julian and Adrian both running, and the three of them splitting in three directions.

She went after the one in the pleated skirt.

Inside of two minutes, all three had been hauled back.

Julian dragged the one in the party dress over and shoved her down into the cake on the pavement. Then he took out a handkerchief and wiped his hands, unhurried. “Why did you do it?”

Adrian, mild as he usually was, had no chivalry to spare either. He pushed the redhead down beside her.

Nora had the one in the pleated skirt by the wrist.

That one clawed at her with her free hand. “Let go of me, you bully! I’m calling the police!”

Nora smiled, took hold of her fingers, and bent them back.

The girl in the pleated skirt screamed. “Ow, that hurts! Let go! You’re going to break my fingers!

“Help! Somebody’s abducting a teenage girl! Call the police! Help, the bully is at it again!”

Nora listened to all of it, pushed her down beside the other two, took out her phone, dialed 911, put it on speaker, and held it out in front of them.

“I called them for you. Happy?”

That stopped all three of them cold.

The one in the pleated skirt recovered first, righteous about it. “Good. Somebody should have. People like you ruin lives. You belong in prison.”

Nora glanced at her and spoke into the phone. “I’m outside the Starfall Media building. My name is Nora Sinclair. Three people just tried to kill me. Yes, a weapon hidden inside a cake, and wine bottles-”

Three sets of eyes went wide, and the excuses started.

“We threw some stuff at her, that isn’t attempted murder! And we’re minors. You can’t call the police on us and you can’t accuse us like that!”

Nora finished giving the dispatcher the details and hung up.

She looked down at the three of them. “Those decorations are sharp, and you threw it at my face. Then the bottles, at my head.

“You’ve been camped outside this building for hours. What would you call that, if not attempted murder?

you think being underage protects you? At 16 you can be charged as an adult, and a record like that follows you the rest of your life.”

Julian was still working on his fingers with the handkerchief. “I can hire the best attorneys in the country. Attempted murder, planned in advance, three of you acting together. 10 years is the floor.”

He tipped his head toward Adrian. “And he’s already bleeding, which goes to intent.”

That frightened them. The redhead and the one in the party dress both grabbed at the third. “What do we do? I don’t want to go to prison.

“You said nothing happens to us because we’re underage. What do we do now?”

Nora turned her head toward Adrian and saw that his right hand was still dripping blood.

Adrian smiled at her. “It’s nothing. A small cut. Don’t worry about it.”

When the cake came at her, his hand had gone up on instinct, and one of those decorations had opened his palm.

Nora’s mouth pressed flat. “I wasn’t worried about you, and I don’t need your help. My husband has it covered.”

Nora pulled an alcohol wipe out of her bag, took Julian’s hand, and cleaned his palm. When she looked up. there was cake down the side of his face and across his shoulder.

She started on his cheek, frowning. “I could have dodged it. If that had hit you in the face, it would have scarred you.”

Julian held still and let her. “You’re not hurt. That’s all I wanted.”

Nora met his eyes, found too much in them, and looked away fast, scrubbing at his neck. “Scars are ugly. I don’t want an ugly husband.”

Adrian watched the two of them, watched how gently she wiped the cake off his face.

Adrian looked down at his own bleeding hand, back at her, and then made himself look at the three on the ground instead. Two of them were crying. The one in the pleated skirt was terrified and working hard not to show it.

“Who are you? Do you even know her? Why would you do something like this? Do you understand that it’s a crime?”

Sirens were already coming up the street.

Nora looked at them. “Save it for the police, before somebody says I beat a confession out of you and calls me a bully again.”

Julian looked at the mess on the pavement, the cake and the bottles. “They’ll be people from online, the extreme end of it, here to avenge Gus Merrick.
