Chapter 195 Who Paid You
Sayulian had corne early to pick Nora up.

Nora looked at the three of them and found the whole thing absurd. “There isn’t a working brain between you. Somebody talked you into committing a crime and you still think you’re the good guys.”
The one in the pleated skirt stuck her neck out and shouted back. “You had it coming. You run one small company and you treat a working man like that. Does money make you better than everybody else?
“Even if the three of us go to prison, you’re still a bully and you’re going too. Nobody will protect you then, and there are plenty more of us. Tonight is only the start.
“Post a video and apologize to Gus Merrick, and to the classmates you tormented, and to everybody watching, and maybe there’s still hope for you.”
The speech left Nora almost impressed. “I don’t think you’re hopelessly stupid. I think somebody paid you. Who sent you here?”
Nobody put this together out of pure conviction. Somebody had funded it.
Panic crossed her face, and she covered it fast. “We couldn’t stand what you are! We wanted to stand up for the people you hurt. Don’t make us out to be something we’re not.”
A cruiser pulled up at the curb, and Nora turned away from them. “I’m finished talking to people who are stupid and rotten at the same time. Save it for them.”
The officers came over, showed their badges, and asked, “Who called it in?”
“I did.” Nora pointed at the three of them, then at the mess on the ground. “They tried to kill me.”
Attempted murder, three people acting together. A charge like that got attention.
They had also taken a call on the way over telling them to handle anything involving Nora Sinclair with particular care.
“Take them in for questioning.” Then, to her, “If you wouldn’t mind coming down to give a statement.”
The first sentence came out hard. The second one was noticeably softer.
Nora got into the car with Julian.
Adrian watched her go, frowning.
One of the officers turned to him. “Sir, do you want that hand looked at first?”
It was still bleeding, and the cut didn’t look shallow.
Adrian waited until the Maybach pulled away before he answered. “No. Let’s do the statement. I can testify.”
In the car, Nora caught Adrian in the rearview mirror, gave him exactly one look, and turned away.
Julian asked, “No concern for him at all?”

“You want me fussing over another man?” she said.

“N” He glanced at her and put his eyes back on the road. “Only that a man bleeding for you is exactly the kind of debt you’d pay back. You’d bandage it, or drive him to a hospital. You did neither.”
Nora laughed. “So you think I’m cold. Or vicious.”
At a red light, he turned his head toward her. “No. You have your reasons, and it comes off you in waves. You hate him.
“What I want to know is what he did to you.”
There was something cold and dangerous under that last question, and something that ached for her.
Julian wanted to know what Adrian had done, and none of it added up, because the two of them had barely known each other long enough for any of it.
Whatever it was had gone deep, deep enough that he wanted to take him apart on her behalf.
Nora dropped her eyes. “Nothing.”
In her last life, he had ground her down to nothing. The sight of him still put her teeth together. He had built a cage out of a love he never felt and kept her inside it.
Adrian had cost her an entire life. He had cost her the last chance she ever had to see her grandmother.
Coming back didn’t erase any of that, and neither did one cut on his hand. She had more self-respect than that.
Nora didn’t want to talk about it, so he let it go and handed her a piece of candy. “You haven’t eaten all night, Watch your blood sugar.”
It was chocolate, the same kind she kept in her own bag. She laughed at it. “I don’t like chocolate. It tastes bitter to me.”
“I’ll get you something else next time,” he said. “What do you like?”
“In the car and at the office it doesn’t have to be candy,” she said. “Anything with enough sugar in it works.”
“All right,” Julian said.
He drove while she made a call to the editor-in-chief at Gale Media.
“Mr. Osgood, this is Nora Sinclair at Starfall Media. Your outlet published a story about me and Gus Merrick without investigating a word of it, and it has damaged my name. I’ve already turned my evidence over to the authorities.
