Chapter 196 A Very Public Apology

Finished

Oood kept pleading. “I’ll apologize again, and I’ll mean it. I’ll post another video and name whoever paid us. Will that do?”

Nora looked at the screen after he hung up and started dialing the other outlets. The small ones apologized immediately and told her they had already gone under.

The big ones apologized too, and every staffer who had touched the story, along with a row of editors above them, had been fired.

Chloe called a few minutes later.

She was almost shouting. “Ms. Sinclair, that was incredible. You’ve been gone barely any time at all and the whole thing is handled.

“Every blogger and every media account out there is apologizing to you and reposting the pool footage. Their executives too. Even the chairman of Fusewire put out an apology video himself.

“Accounts with 10,000,000 followers are talking about what actually happened at that pool, and Preston Voss is leading it. The story has completely flipped. Everybody’s going after Gus Merrick now.”

The excitement was contagious enough that Nora smiled at it, and she could picture Chloe bouncing around the office and spinning in circles while she talked.

“It’s turned around, so go home,” she said. “It was never that big.”

Chloe made two agreeable sounds and went right back to worship. “You’re amazing. Something like this normally takes two or three days to turn.”

Dad hasn’t even done anything yet and she’s already fixed it. She’s better at this than he is.

Chloe could talk forever. Nora listened without interrupting, because that kind of energy was good to be around.

After the call, she opened her phone and went through the turn. The top item was the Fusewire chairman’s apology.

Albert Renner had put on a suit, called a press conference, and stood at the podium facing the cameras. “I’m the chairman of Fusewire. I want to offer a formal apology to Nora Sinclair. Through poor oversight on our part, we published a story attacking her without verifying a word of it, and we did serious damage to her name and to her company’s name. I am truly sorry.

“I’d also like to lay out what actually happened between Ms. Sinclair and Gus Merrick. We have the security footage. It began with Merrick targeting Sabrina Cole…”

Renner went through the whole sequence and played the videos, some of it security footage and some of it shot on people’s phones.

All of it showed Gus using his position on the shoot to make Sabrina eat cake after cake, drink wine, and jump into the pool, which was what led to the scene at the pool afterward.

A long line of the accounts that had pushed the story came forward too, saying they had been paid to repost

his video.

ger than any of it was Preston Voss’s video.

Preston hadn’t bothered with the formality. He filmed it at home in what he wore around the house, relaxed and polished and impossible to look away from.

Preston looked straight into the camera. “First, I owe Nora Sinclair an apology. I was working and only saw the story late, so I didn’t come forward in time to set the record straight.

“I have footage that shows Gus Merrick went after Sabrina Cole first, and that he was paid to do it. I’d ask everyone to look at the facts before deciding who to condemn.”

Between the chairman of Fusewire, the biggest news outlet in the country, apologizing on camera and the most famous actor in the country putting out footage his fans shared everywhere, it was trending inside of minutes, and Nora’s name was cleared almost as fast.

[Gus Merrick is disgusting. He took money to go after somebody, then flipped the story and cut the footage to frame her. If Preston Voss and Albert Renner hadn’t come forward, she’d still be getting torn apart out here.]

[An hour ago people were screaming about force-feeding her cake and pouring beer down her throat. They’re the ones who should be apologizing now.]

[Preston Voss is the kind of idol you want. None of this had anything to do with him and he stepped up the second he wrapped. That’s real integrity.]

[He’s always been like this. He’s helped more people in this industry than anybody knows. I will never regret being a fan of his. Share this so more people see who he is and what actually happened.]

Preston had more than 400,000,000 followers, and the shares and the comments poured in.

Four of the top 10 trending items were about him speaking up for her.
