Chapter 203 Drop the Charges

ANVictor could do was turn to Nora. “Nora, come with me. I need to talk to you.”

“Wait for me here,” Nora told Julian, then went after Victor.

In an empty corner off to the side, she turned to him. “What do you want to talk about?”

Victor rubbed his aching chest and finally put on his best caring-father act. “What did Mandy do to you? Tell your dad. When I get home, I’ll teach her a lesson and make it up to you.”

Nora scoffed. “Yvette and Mandy paid people to make up lies about me and post them online so the whole internet would come after me. Then, they hired someone to hurt me, and I almost died. You call that bullying? You’re gonna teach her a lesson when you get home?”

Victor’s idea of teaching Mandy a lesson was lowering his voice a little, telling her not to do it again, and calling it a day.

Nora had long since gotten used to him playing favorites, but it still hurt. She was his daughter too, wasn’t she? Yet he favored Mandy so blatantly that it was like she wasn’t his own child at all.

Victor frowned and gave her a doubtful look. “That serious? That can’t be right. Mandy’s not that bad. Are you sure you didn’t misunderstand?”

Nora let out a cold laugh. “Believe whatever you want. Yvette and Mandy are in there giving statements. They’ve already confessed, and with guilty consciences like theirs, they’ll end up spilling every rotten thing they’ve ever done.”

She glanced sideways at Victor and saw that he’d gone even paler. So she kept going. “Plus, Julian has enough pull to make sure they rot in prison. To get a lighter sentence, they’ll say anything and do anything.”

In truth, things weren’t nearly as bad as she was making them sound. There wasn’t enough evidence to prove those three girls had planned to kill her, so attempted murder would never stick. At most, it was assault.

And since Gus had handled the money transfers and everything else, there was no way to make Yvette and Mandy own up to that part either. But she could still make it all sound much worse, and Victor already looked nervous enough to believe anything.

Victor didn’t think for a second that she was bluffing. Maybe Nora couldn’t pull it off, but Julian could. He was the Weston heir, after all.

He wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and tried a gentler approach. “Nora, do it for your dad. Drop the case.”

Nora gave a disbelieving laugh. “You people are something else. Do it for you? What makes you think you’re worth that much to me? I nearly got killed, and you want me to drop the case as a personal favor?”

Before Victor could say a word, she went cold and hit him with the harshest thing she could think of. “No way! I want them both to rot in prison!”

Victor looked like he still wanted to pull the father card, so she added, “Besides, even if I were willing to drop it, Julian wouldn’t be.

“I’m his wife now. I’m Mrs. Weston. Bully me, and you might as well slap Julian in the face. You might as

e-slap the whole Weston family.”

That had Victor breaking into a cold sweat all over again. He looked over at Julian, and Julian was already staring at him, cold and sharp enough to cut. It made him shudder.

He turned back to Nora and gritted his teeth like every word physically hurt. “Drop the case and let them off the hook, and I’ll give you the azurewort. Your grandma needs it for her medicine, and her yearly dose is coming up soon.”

Once a year, Rosalind had to take a special medicine, and the key herb in it was azurewort.

Nora had always believed Victor was the only one who had the herb. But now the Blithes had some too, and she couldn’t help wondering if the two were connected.

That gave her an idea, and she decided to test him. “You’re not the only one who has azurewort. All I have to do is ask Julian, and he’ll find it for me. So I’m really not in any rush.”

For a split second, Victor looked rattled.

Nora put on her most innocent look. “But you’re still my father, and I can’t stand to see you in a tough spot. So I’ll take one for the team. I’ll accept the azurewort and won’t press criminal charges.”

“I knew it.” Victor let out a relieved breath, clearly pleased. “You talk tough, but you’ve got a soft heart. That’s my girl.

“I don’t have the azurewort on me. I’ll get it to you in three days. Go drop the case now.”

Then, he added, “And sweet-talk Julian into calling off whatever he’s got going, or the company really will go under. That company was your mother’s life’s work, after all.”

Oh, so now he remembers my mom? Nora scoffed to herself.

On the outside, though, she nodded like the perfect daughter. “Okay.”

Once he’d said his piece, Victor stepped away, turned his back to Nora, and made a phone call. She watched him for a moment. He was probably having someone bring him the azurewort.

Nora hadn’t even made it back to the lobby when Adrian called after her. “Nora!” He came hurrying over.

But Julian got there first and stepped to her side. “Something else, Mr. Pierce?” he asked coldly.
