Adrian took a deep breath and looked at Nora. “Forgive Mandy this one time, and I’ll do anything you ask. No conditions.”
“Anything at all?” Nora asked. “Even murder?”
Adrian looked her straight in the eye and didn’t hesitate. “If you ask for it, yes!”
Nora heard footsteps. It had to be Victor coming back, and she didn’t want him catching on, so she spoke quickly. “I’m not asking you to break the law. Just post an apology to me on your official account. Tell everyone the truth and clear up the lies my old classmates spread about me. That’s all.”
It was a small ask, and Adrian nodded right away. “Done.”
Nora smiled at him. “You really like Mandy that much? Enough to do anything for her?”
She didn’t believe for a second that someone as selfish as Adrian could actually love Mandy.
Adrian just smiled and didn’t answer. He looked down and started typing up the post.
Maybe he didn’t love Mandy all that much. But she had saved his life. She’d been the one light in his darkest hour, and he meant to protect her.
Victor came back off the phone with no idea what they’d been talking about. “Did you drop the case yet?” he asked Nora anxiously.
“Mr. Pierce was asking me to drop it too, so I got held up,” Nora said. “I’m going now.”
Her phone pinged. Adrian had sent her a screenshot of the apology he’d just posted.
It read, “I’m Mandy Sinclair’s boyfriend. I’m very sorry about what happened, and I want to apologize to Nora Sinclair. What people heard about the Seacliff Lodge incident isn’t the truth. Mandy took things out of context and made things up…”
Nora skimmed it and was satisfied enough. The case wouldn’t have held up anyway, so dropping it in exchange for the azurewort was a nice bonus.
And Adrian’s public apology pointed the finger right at Mandy. That alone would give her a taste of what an online pile-on felt like.
Before long, Yvette and Mandy came out. They’d been perfectly put together earlier, but now they both looked like a mess, sweaty and flushed.
They shot Nora a resentful look, then hung their heads like a pair of sore losers.
Mandy threw herself into Adrian’s arms. “Ace, I knew you wouldn’t abandon me.”
Adrian frowned and gently eased her out of his arms. “You’re okay now. Let’s go.”
Mandy hooked her arm through his and looked over at Nora, gloating. “Sorry, Nora. Ace is so good to me. He’ll always protect me.”

What she really meant was that Adrian was hers, and no matter what she did, he’d always protect her. And what she wanted to rub in most was that it didn’t matter if Nora was the one who’d really saved his life.
ndy was the one he was protecting.
“Whatever makes you happy,” Nora said with a smile.
Victor gave Julian his most eager smile. “Mr. Weston, it’s been a long night. You must be hungry. How about a late bite and a couple of drinks?”
Julian wasn’t interested, but he still turned to Nora. “Do you want to go?”
“Just looking at them kills my appetite,” Nora said, glancing at the three of them. “Let’s go home.”
Julian made a low sound of agreement, and Victor was left standing’there, red-faced.
“Dad, why do you keep sucking up to people who couldn’t care less about you?” Mandy said in disgust. Then, she smiled at him. “Take Ace and me out instead. Ace would never act all high and mighty like that.”
Victor looked at Adrian hopefully, but before he could even get the invitation out, Adrian turned him down, polite but distant. “Sorry, I have some work to take care of back at the office. Maybe next time, Mr. Sinclair
Mandy instantly soured. Without even trying, Adrian had just made a fool of her.
Yvette jumped in to smooth over the awkward silence. “It’s been a long day, and everyone’s tired. You should get some rest, Mr. Pierce. We’re heading home too.”
“Right, we’re all tired,” Victor said with a forced laugh, trying to save a little face. “I’ve got things to deal with at the company too.”
Then, he glared at Yvette and Mandy. “This is all your fault. You stirred up trouble out of nowhere, and look how much it’s cost the company!”
Yvette felt humiliated getting chewed out in front of Adrian. “Whatever it is, we’ll talk about it at home.”
Then, she tried to rescue Mandy’s image. “Besides, Mandy only did it because she cares so much about Mr. Pierce. She acted on impulse. She didn’t mean any harm. She’s not a bad girl…”
The group stepped out of the police station. Before Yvette could finish, Blake came running toward her. “Aunt Yvette! Aunt Yvette! Thank God you’re okay!”
Yvette got an instant headache at the sight of him. She had a bad feeling about this.
And it only got worse when she saw Nora standing by the Maybach, smiling at her. Nora’s look was so sharp it seemed to cut right through her, and a chill ran down Yvette’s back.
Her guilty conscience kicked in. She grabbed Blake’s arm. “What are you doing here? Did something happen at home? I’ll go back with you.”
