And Adrian, the Pierce heir, was dating Blake’s other cousin, Mandy!

Now that he knew who they were, Blake looked at them like a man who’d just stumbled onto two gold mines. His eyes were practically glowing.

He hurried over, pulling a pack of premium cigarettes from his pocket, and held one out to Julian with a big, slimy grin. “Hey, Julian! I’m Blake Jessup, your wife’s cousin.”

This was the richest man in town. If Blake could get in good with him, the $50,000,000 he owed would be nothing. Even $100,000,000, or $1,000,000,000, would be pocket change to him. Blake had to win over his/ billionaire cousin-in-law, whatever it took.

Julian looked Blake over. With that eagle-print T-shirt, the skinny jeans, and the thick gold chain around his neck, Blake looked like a two-bit hustler. Julian frowned and leaned down to Nora. “Your cousin?”

Nora gave a cold laugh. “My mom was an only child. So where exactly would I get a cousin like him?”

“Right,” Julian said, shooting Blake a cold glance.

Blake was about as shameless as they came, but Nora’s words hit him like a slap in the face, and even he went red.

He grinned at her anyway. “Come on, Nora, don’t be like that. My aunt’s your stepmom, so that makes us cousins. And that makes your husband family too.”

The longer Nora talked to Blake, the more nervous Yvette got. She tugged at him again. “Go home. I’ll call you later.”

“I haven’t even said hi to Julian yet,” Blake protested. “And Adrian’s right over there too. Aunt Yvette, stop pulling me…”

Yvette kept trying to drag him away, but he was dead set on getting chummy with Julian and Adrian. That was two bank vaults he could tap.

While the two of them tugged back and forth, Nora watched them and spoke slowly. “Yvette, why does Blake look so much like you? He could pass for your own son.”

Those words hit Yvette like a bolt of lightning. She practically jumped out of her skin.

She screamed at Nora, “What the hell are you talking about? Blake’s my brother’s son! Nephews look like their aunts all the time!

“What kind of filthy mind do you have, saying something like that about me and my brother? Saying Blake looks like my son?”

Nora blinked innocently. “I only said he looks like you. But when you fly off the handle like this, it makes you look guilty. Now I’m starting to think I hit a nerve. Like maybe you cheated on my dad and had some other man’s bastard on the side.”

That sent Yvette into a panic all over again. She glanced guiltily at Victor.

Victor studied Blake. He did look a lot like Yvette around the eyes, but Victor had always chalked that up to him being her nephew.

But after what Nora had just said, and with Yvette reacting like this, he started to think it might actually be possible.

Yvette could tell he was starting to suspect her, and she lashed out, humiliated and furious. “Victor, you can’t seriously suspect me! We’ve been together for over 20 years. Don’t you think you’d know if I’d had another kid?”

Victor thought about it, and she had a point. They’d never been apart for more than a year at a time, so she’d never had the chance to have some other man’s kid behind his back. He smiled. “No, of course not.”

Nora wasn’t done stirring the pot. She tilted her head, looking from Mandy to Victor. “Come to think of it, Mandy doesn’t look like Dad either. She’s not a bastard, is she?”

Mandy exploded. “Nora, say that one more time, and I’ll rip your-”

Before she could finish, Julian gave her a look as cold and sharp as a knife. She shut her mouth instantly and shrank into Adrian’s arms, terrified.

But she still glared at Nora with pure hatred. “Someday, you’ll find out who the real bastard is!”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Nora asked coldly, frowning in confusion.

Victor stormed over and slapped Mandy across the face.

Mandy was stunned. “Dad, you hit me again!” she cried.

Victor glared at her. “Watch your mouth! Don’t you ever smear Nora’s mother like that again! Do it one more time, and I’ll knock your teeth in!”

That only made Mandy feel more wronged. She jabbed a finger at Nora. “So she gets to say my mom slept around and had a bastard, but I can’t say her mom-”

Victor slapped her again, even harder, and the crack of it cut her off mid-sentence.

Mandy pressed a hand to her swelling cheek and looked around at everyone.

Nora stared at her coldly. “You’re lucky Dad got to you first. Otherwise, I’d have slapped that mouth shut the second you opened it!”

Mandy burst into tears. She looked to Adrian, hoping he’d stand up for her. “Ace…” she whimpered.

But Adrian hated hearing words like bastard. He hated it even more when someone accused a man’s first wife of cheating and having another man’s child.

Even his easygoing expression turned grim. “Apologize to Nora.”
