Chapter 226 Everybody Shut Up
Before Nora could say a word, people in the audience started to object.

“Dr. Blithe’s talk was great. Clear and easy to follow. I don’t think we need to hear from Nora Sinclair. It’s a waste of our time.”
“This symposium only happens every two years. We’ve spent a long time preparing. We’re here to advance medicine and help more patients, not to watch some rich girl put on a show and pad her résumé.”
“Nora Sinclair, if you’re here as a sponsor, fine. Sit up there quietly and make yourself look important. We don’t mind. But please don’t waste our valuable time.”
“Most of us don’t have much money. We can’t make $10,000,000 in a minute. But in a minute, these hands can pull someone back from the brink and save who knows how many lives.”
“So please don’t waste our time with useless talk that has nothing to do with medicine. A rich girl like you probably can’t even name a few diseases, let alone use the technical terms.”
“Don’t waste our time!” someone shouted, and plenty of others chimed in, telling Nora to keep quiet.
Some of them genuinely wanted to learn. Others were old hands who’d figured out that Cordelia didn’t like Nora and that this whole thing was a setup. Either way, siding with Cordelia was the safe bet.
And that was exactly what Cordelia wanted. Put Nora on a pedestal, let these people humiliate her, and show her that some circles would never let her in.
Mandy was thrilled to see all these big shots ganging up on Nora. “She hasn’t even said a word, and they’re already telling her to shut up.
“Nora, if I were you, I’d bow and apologize to everyone right now. Or fake being sick and faint on the spot. At least you’d keep a shred of dignity.
“Or worst case, you’re pretty enough. Just turn on the charm and squeeze out a couple of tears. With this many men around, someone’s bound to feel sorry for you and baby you.”
Mandy didn’t bother keeping her voice down. She hated Nora so much that she’d stopped even pretending to get along. All she wanted was to watch Nora crash and burn so she could gloat.
Nora was just about to speak when a loud bang cut through the room.
Zane had jumped to his feet and slammed both hands down on the table. “Everybody shut the hell up!” he roared.
With the microphone right in front of him, the words boomed through the whole hall, and the room went dead silent.
Mandy flinched and stared at him, scared stiff.
Even Nora was caught off guard. She stared at Zane in disbelief. Is he actually sticking up for me?
Cordelia was just as shocked. Zane had known Nora for less than half an hour. Before today, Cordelia had even dropped little hints here and there to make him think Nora was bad news. And yet, here he was,

he glared around the room. “Look at you. A bunch of grown men ganging up on a young woman before she’s even opened her mouth. Yapping away, shooting her down, insulting her.
“Even a guy on death row gets last words. You won’t even let her talk before you try to boot her off the stage?
“You think you’re so great? You look down on her because she’s young? Haven’t you ever heard of prodigies? Of geniuses?
“You hotshot med students are barely in your twenties yourselves. So nobody else is allowed to be a genius?
“And you old guys are all slippery as hell. Kiss up all you want, but don’t stomp on people while you’re at it. You never know who you’re stepping on. Be careful, or you’ll trip and lose what little reputation you’ve goy left.”
Zane tore into the whole room, and not one person dared to talk back.
They’d all been warned before they came. Zane wasn’t just rich. The Whitlocks had real power, and nobody wanted to cross them.
Once he was done with them, Zane turned and glared at Mandy. “And especially you. Were you dropped on your head as a baby, or were you just born without a brain?
“At an event this big, you’re her sister, and instead of standing up for her, you’re kicking her while she’s down.
“How dumb are you? If your sister’s getting laughed at up here as the guest of honor, what do you think people are saying about you, standing over there as a waitress?
“And you’ve got the nerve to say you can’t wait to see Nora fall on her face? Please. That ugly face of yours is the one that deserves a slap. You’re ugly, you’re mean, and you’re an idiot!”
Mandy turned bright red. She was on the verge of tears, but she didn’t dare say a single word back to Zane.
Zane felt a whole lot better after chewing them all out.
He turned and found Nora studying him curiously, and he huffed. “Don’t get the wrong idea. I wasn’t sticking up for you. They were just being so loud I was going deaf.
“Hurry up and give your talk. Don’t waste time. I still need Dr. Blithe to see my grandma later.”
Nora laughed softly at how prickly and awkward he was being. “Thank you.”
That only made Zane squirm more. He shifted his chair. “I told you, I wasn’t helping you. What the hell are you thanking me for? Just give your talk.”
