Chapter 228 Caught in the Middle

Mes breathed a sigh of relief and hurried off to make the arrangements.

While Nora was speaking, she felt someone watching her intently, and she knew right away it was Julian She paused and turned to look.

Sure enough, there he was in a crisp suit, standing quietly near the door and watching her. Their eyes met.

He made no effort to hide how he felt about her. Usually, he looked cold and unreadable, but right now, he looked incredibly proud of her.

For some reason, Nora got flustered, and her cheeks went warm. She almost said the wrong word, then quickly corrected herself and kept going. “This type of cancer…”

Zane noticed the change in her and frowned. He turned to look at the door.

There stood Julian, tall and lean. Even without a spotlight on him, he was impossible to miss, with that cool, aristocratic air of his.

Zane knew exactly who he was. This was the richest man in the city.

Julian looked back at Zane and narrowed his eyes dangerously. Zane raised a brow right back at him, daring him to try something.

So this is the lucky bastard who got to her first? Rich and handsome or not, Zane didn’t think Julian deserved a girl like Nora, and he didn’t like him one bit.

The moment their eyes met, it was like two sworn enemies coming face-to-face. Without a single word, they’d already fought it out.

The air turned tense. It felt like a fight could break out any second.

Zane could barely stay in his seat. He wanted to march out there and throw down with Julian, just to show him who was boss.

But before he could get up, a server came over to him. “Mr. Whitlock, your grandmother isn’t in her room. She may be missing.”

Zane shot to his feet.

Nora looked at him, puzzled. “What’s wrong?”

“Something came up,” Zane said with a frown. “I need to step out for a bit.”

Augusta was no ordinary woman. If word got out that she’d gone missing, it would cause a huge uproar. Worse, she had dementia. If the wrong people got their hands on her, things would get a lot uglier.

Zane hurried out, and Julian strolled in and sat down next to Nora like it was the most natural thing in the

world.

Nora gave him a puzzled look. Julian just smiled and gestured for her to keep going, and she didn’t know what to say to that.

Cordelia frowned as Julian sat down. She murmured something to Gideon, then got up and left too.

Across the room, Mandy saw Adrian walk in, and her face lit up. “Ace!” she whispered happily. She started toward him.

Paige grabbed her arm and warned her quietly, “Mandy, don’t go running off. If the young healer and Dr. Blithe get annoyed, there’ll be nobody to treat your future mother-in-law.”

Mandy remembered why she was standing there in the first place, so she forced herself to stay put.

Paige tried to reassure her. “You don’t need to go to him. Your boyfriend will come find you.”

Mandy thought so too. She lifted her chin smugly. “Of course he will. I don’t need you to tell me that. Ade cares about me. He’ll come stand with me.”

But she was about to get a nasty surprise. Adrian didn’t come over to her at all. He walked up to the head table and sat down on Nora’s left, in the seat Cordelia had just left.

Mandy’s expression turned ugly in an instant. She glared at Nora, unable to hide her hatred.

Even Paige couldn’t hold back a mocking little laugh, and to Mandy, it stung like a slap.

Nora glanced at Adrian as he sat down on her left. He set a butterscotch candy in front of her. She barely spared it a look, ignored him, and kept talking.

Adrian was on her left, and Julian was on her right. Why does this feel like a battlefield?

Nora ignored them both and talked for another 10 minutes or so. “That’s all on the cancer vascular atlas for today. Let’s take a 15-minute break.”

As soon as she finished, she stood up, quietly reached down to take hold of Julian’s sleeve, and walked out of the room. She never once looked at Adrian. She didn’t even give him a sideways glance.

Julian walked beside her, looking down at her fingertips gently pinching his sleeve. It was like she had him on a string, and he followed her without a second thought.

Nora pulled him into the empty conference room next door. It was just the two of them.

She turned to face him. “What are you doing here? Don’t you have an important meeting?”

Julian looked down at her. “I do. I moved it here at the last minute. When I saw you up there, I stopped to

watch.

“You know so much more about medicine than I ever realized. You’re incredible. So incredible that…”

He stared at her and said in a low, husky voice, “So incredible that I want to hide you away where no one else can look at you.”

Nora frowned. She really didn’t like that kind of possessiveness.

“Julian…” She looked up to say something, but the moment she opened her mouth, he kissed her.

He gripped her waist, cradled the back of her head, and pressed her against the wall. He kissed her fiercely,
