Chapter 232 She Won’t Let Go

Ma’am, you-“Nora started.

Augusta corrected her with a stern look. “Grandma.”.

“Ma’am…”

“Grandma!”

Nora decided to let that one go.

She was still being patient with Augusta. She smiled and asked, “So, do you-

Augusta wasn’t giving up. “Call me Grandma.”

Finished

Nora looked at her, so sweet and so stubborn, and gave in with a helpless smile. “Okay, Grandma. You say I’m Tilly. So can you tell me my phone number?”

Augusta thought about it, but she couldn’t remember. She looked at Nora. “You’re right here in front of me Why would I need your number? You just think I’m old. You think I’m old and dumb, and now you want to get rid of me too.”

She actually looked hurt, and Nora felt like she was getting nowhere.

“Then can I borrow your phone?” Nora tried. “I can’t find mine. I’ll call it.”

Augusta turned out her pockets to show her. “No phone.”

Nora looked at all four pockets, two on her top and two on her pants, turned inside out. There wasn’t so much as a thread in them, let alone a phone.

And now Nora noticed that Augusta was wearing a hotel housekeeping uniform!

Did her family really send her out to clean hotel rooms at her age, with dementia and everything? So they can squeeze the hotel for money if she gets hurt? Nora couldn’t help assuming the worst about them.

Nora felt terrible for her.

She checked the time. Cordelia probably didn’t want her back anyway, so she’d get Augusta settled first.

Nora bent down and scooped up the kitten, which had been curled up quietly at her feet. “Okay, how about this? Come rest in a room for a while, and once I’m done here, I’ll take you home. Sound good?”

Augusta looked uneasy. “You won’t run off and leave me all by myself?”

Nora had actually considered calling the police later and letting them track down Augusta’s family.

But her family sounded awful. And there was something so kind and gentle about Augusta that Nora felt drawn to her. She couldn’t bring herself to abandon her.

Nora nodded. “I won’t leave you alone. As soon as I’m done, I’ll come get you and take you home.”

“Okay. But you have to call me Grandma.”

ora sighed. “Okay, Grandma.”

Only then was Augusta satisfied. She happily hugged the kitten and went along with Nora.

Finished

Nora went to the front desk to get a room. Augusta waited right beside her with the kitten, watching her the whole time like she was afraid-Nora would run off.

Once Nora had the key card, she took Augusta up to the room.

Meanwhile, Zane was frantic. If he didn’t find Augusta in five more minutes, he was going to lock down the Wyndmere and tear the place apart until he did.

He was pacing in circles when his phone finally rang. “Mr. Whitlock, we found her. She’s with some woman, and they just checked into a room.”

Zane let out a breath of relief, then tensed right back up. “Who’s she with? How did she end up with this woman? Find out everything about her. I want to know if she’s after something.”

Most of the time, Augusta wasn’t thinking clearly. She had good days and bad days, and it would be easy for someone with an agenda to get close to her and use her against the Whitlocks.

Zane

got the security footage in no time. On the screen, he saw Nora gently coaxing Augusta along.

He relaxed at once and called back. “Never mind the background check. Her name’s Nora Sinclair. Grandma’s fine with her.”

The moment he said it, he paused. He couldn’t figure out why knowing Augusta was with Nora put him at

ease.

After all, he’d only met her today.

“Should we go get her now?” one of his people asked.

Zane snapped out of it. “Wait until Nora leaves. Don’t let her find out who Grandma is.”

He shouldn’t trust Nora that much. For all he knew, she’d gone looking for Augusta on purpose.

Maybe it was because Nora was about the same age as his missing sister, Matilda. That had to be why he trusted her more than he had any reason to.

Nora had just gotten Augusta settled in the room when she got a frantic call from the conference hall. “Ms. Sinclair, you need to get back here right away. Something’s happened!”

She glanced at Augusta, who was watching her obediently, and lowered her voice. “What happened?”

“Some woman named Tanya Ingram is making a scene in the conference room. She says you killed her baby, and she wants you to pay with your life!”

Tanya came to see me yesterday, and today she lost the baby? And now she’s making a scene at a conference like this? Nora frowned deeply.

“Got it,” Nora said. “I’ll be right there.”
