Chapter 233 Take the Fall for Her

Augusta sat on the couch, stroking the kitten, and huffed. “I found Tilly all by myself. You don’t need to trick me into looking for her. I’m going home with Tilly.”
“You think Nora Sinclair is Tilly?” Zane asked with a frown.
Augusta’s eyes lit up. “Tilly’s name is Nora Sinclair? What a pretty naine.”
Then, she looked confused. “But why is Tilly a Sinclair instead of a Whitlock? Her mommy isn’t a Sinclaiy
either.”
She got upset. “Your mother must be mad at me. She must be mad that I lost our little sweetheart.”
Zane was used to conversations with Augusta going off the rails.
He explained patiently, “Grandma, Nora isn’t Tilly. We’re still looking for Tilly.
“And Mom isn’t mad at you. Come home with me now. Our little sister’s waiting for us at home.”
Whenever Augusta said she’d found Tilly, nobody believed her anymore.
Every time she went out, she came home with a new Tilly. At first, the family had believed her every time and even had DNA tests done.
Later, they realized she was just confused. All it took was someone who looked a little like their mother, a tiny beauty mark under one eye, hair that curled slightly at the ends, or anything else that reminded her.
Augusta hugged the kitten. “I’m not going back. I’m going home with Tilly.”
Zane kept coaxing her, but she flat-out refused to budge.
She sat on the couch like royalty holding court. “I’m staying with my precious granddaughter. You try to take me away, and I’ll beat you to death, you little brat!”
Zane was at his wit’s end. All he wanted was to trick her into going home. “Tilly really is at home, Grandma. Just come back and see.”
Augusta rolled her eyes at him. “I’m old, not stupid. That’s not Tilly at home. That’s Iris.”
Zane gave up. Augusta was impossibly stubborn, and nobody in the family could do a thing with her.
“I’d better talk this over with my brother,” he muttered.
He was about to make the call when someone knocked on the door. “Mr. Whitlock, there’s trouble in the conference room. Apparently, Nora Sinclair got somebody killed.”
Augusta shot to her feet. “No way. Tilly’s such a good girl. She’d never get anybody killed.”
She whipped around and gave Zane a sharp look. “Go see what’s going on. And if it’s true… Well, um, then you take the fall for Tilly.”
Zane nearly choked. “What kind of spell did Nora put on Grandma?” he muttered under his breath. “She

gusta smacked him upside the head. “What are you mumbling about? Hurry up and go. And stay out of sight around me and Tilly. You’re so mean, Tilly might not like you, and then she won’t want me as her grandma either!”
Zane was speechless. He’d done absolutely nothing to deserve this.
There was no way he could get Augusta to leave. He stepped out, closed the door behind him, and told his assistant, “Get Grandma a new phone. Put my third brother’s number in it and nobody else’s
“Then look into this thing about Nora getting someone killed today. If the evidence is solid, turn it over to the police. Don’t cover for her just because Grandma likes her.”
For some reason, he trusted Nora, and he didn’t dislike her. But when someone’s life was on the line, he wasn’t going to bend the rules for her, and he certainly wasn’t going to take the fall like Augusta wanted. He wasn’t stupid.
“Yes, sir.” His assistant turned to go.
Zane called him back. “Oh, right. What did you find on the parking garage footage?”
“When we were looking for your grandmother, I checked that too,” the assistant said, turning back around. “Ms. Sinclair really did go down to the parking garage.
“But you were parked in a blind spot, so the cameras didn’t catch her.”
Zane frowned. “What about my dash cam?”
“Your dash cam’s broken,” the assistant admitted awkwardly.
Zane’s frown deepened. “How convenient,” he said coolly.
His assistant sighed. “You and your third brother swap cars all the time, and he’s got an even worse temper than you do. Broken dash cams happen a lot.”
Zane had to admit he had a point. If Zane was a little hellion, his third brother was the big one.
“Fine,” Zane said. “Go look into this thing with Nora.”
His assistant hesitated, then added, “The footage shows Ms. Sinclair coming out of the parking garage right when Olivia Blithe was putting you in the ambulance.
“I also called 911 dispatch. The dispatchers on duty that day said they never heard Ms. Sinclair’s voice. The only person who talked to them from start to finish was Olivia.
“Sir, Ms. Sinclair is pretty, but her family’s not exactly top tier, and she’s never been to medical school. There’s almost no way she saved you. Maybe she knew who you were, happened to see Olivia save you, and wanted to get in with you, so she’s pretending-”
Zane glared at him. “Do I look like someone who judges people by their looks?
“And another thing! Don’t think so badly of Nora. I think she’s pretty great. People steal credit for saving someone all the time. Who’s to say who stole it from whom?
