Brent ignored that. Instead, he checked his watch. “Spare me the speeches. You’ve got one last minute to decide. This is as far as I can help you.”

He set the confession in front of Nora and started counting down. “Fifty-nine, fifty-eight, fifty-seven…” He counted all the way down to one.

When the minute was up, Brent glanced at the officers outside, then held out a pen to Nora. “Sign it, or you’re going to county jail.

“And trust me, the people in there won’t be nearly as nice as I am.”

Nora wasn’t the least bit intimidated. She gave Brent a cold smile. “Give Cordelia a message for me. She came after me, so she’d better be ready to pay for it. And as for you…” She paused, then went on. “Mr. Hammond, you make your money the dirty way, and it’s about to catch up with you.”

The moment she finished, the door clicked open, and two police officers walked in.

Brent pushed the pen closer to Nora. “Ms. Sinclair, it’s not too late to sign. Once you’re Dr. Blithe’s student, she’ll look out for you.”

He’d barely finished when one of the officers called his name. “Brent Hammond?”

Brent looked at the officer, confused. “We’re almost done here. She’s about to confess-”

Before he could finish, the officer snapped a pair of handcuffs on his wrists. “Brent Hammond, you’re under arrest for embezzlement and obstruction of justice. We have all the evidence we need.”

Brent froze, then started to panic. “Wait, there’s got to be some mistake. I haven’t committed any crime! How could you… No, listen, I’m a lawyer. Why would I ever break the law?”

The police chief walked in and held up the arrest warrant himself. “The evidence is airtight. Save it for the judge.”

Then, the chief personally unlocked Nora’s handcuffs. “Ms. Sinclair, Tanya’s confessed. She never had a threatened miscarriage. She was trying to extort you. Then, by sheer bad luck, the nurse gave her the wrong medication. The nurse was scared of taking the blame, so when it all came out, they both seized the chance to pin it on you.

“We’ve taken both of them into custody. You’re cleared, and you’re free to go.”

It didn’t surprise Nora at all that the chief had shown up to deal with this himself.

“Quick, get Ms. Sinclair some water! And a warm blanket too, hurry!” The chief was sweating bullets, and he treated Nora with the utmost respect.

He had no idea who she really was, but one higher-up after another had called to chew him out over her. One wrong move, and he could kiss his job goodbye.

Someone quickly brought Nora a glass of warm water and a brand-new blanket.

She drank it down. It was lightly salted, and her parched throat felt much better right away, though the salt

stung her cracked lips. She’d lost so much fluid that she only started to get a little strength back once she had some water in her.

Nora walked over to Brent. “Looks like you won’t be passing along that message after all.”

Brent had seen how respectfully the chief was treating Nora, and deep down, he knew every charge against him would stick. “Nora, I work for Dr. Blithe. I came here to help you, and you’re throwing it back in my face. You-”

Before he could finish, someone spoke up from the doorway. “You what? Dr. Blithe is so powerful that she gets to have you bully people into confessing?”

At the sound of that deep, commanding voice, Nora looked toward the door.

It was Spencer Lowell, the friend Julian had called for help on the way over. He wore a sharp suit and looked every bit the steady, serious type, but he strode in so fast that he practically left a breeze behind him.

He glared at the chief. “What are you standing around for? The evidence is airtight, and you’ve got the warrant. Get him out of here and question him. Those victims deserve justice!”

Then, Spencer turned to Nora with a smile. “Nora, Mrs. Weston, Tilly, this Brent Hammond is a real piece of work. He specializes in cases where young women are the victims, and he’ll pull every dirty trick in the book to get them to say they brought it on themselves.

“He’ll do anything for money. We’ve got the evidence, and he’s looking at 10 years minimum.

“So don’t you worry, Nora, Mrs. Weston, Tilly. Scum like him are going to have every last cent seized!”

Nora studied him. “You’re General Stratton’s secretary, aren’t you? Mr. Lowell?”

General Stratton was retired now, but he’d once wielded enormous power, and the Strattons were still one of the most influential families around.

Spencer nodded. “Nora, Mrs. Weston, Tilly, that’s me. Spencer Lowell.”

Nora gave him a puzzled look. “Why do you keep calling me all that?”

Spencer held up three fingers. “Three different people asked me to look out for you.”

Nora stared at him, totally lost. Then, it clicked. “Ryder and Julian?”

Calling her plain Nora, like they were old friends, had Ryder written all over it. And since she was married, “Mrs. Weston” had to be Julian’s idea. But Tilly?

“Let’s get you out of here first,” Spencer said. “Tanya and the nurse are outside, and Julian and Ryder will be here any minute.

“If they see you looking like this, they’re going to lose it. Even I’m scared, never mind everyone else here.”

Brent was shaken. Spencer was General Stratton’s own secretary, and yet he was treating Nora with that kind of deference. Worse still, three different people had called him on her behalf. Whoever Nora was, she had some serious connections.
