Chapter 242 The Nearest Hotel

Brent had never made his money off the victims. He made it off the rich. As long as someone paid him enough, he could turn any victim into the guilty party.
When Nora stepped out, several people crowded around her.
Tanya rushed at her, grabbed her hand, and started slapping her own face with it, sobbing. “Nora, I know I was wrong! Go ahead, hit me! I’m the one who got those kids to bully you back then. I’m so sorry!”
Nora yanked her hand back in disgust. “Don’t touch me. That’s disgusting.”
Tanya was still crying. “And the posts about you online this time, your stepmom Yvette put me up to that
too!
“When I went to the hospital yesterday, the doctor said I was fine and told me to go home and rest. But I was scared my husband would divorce me and leave me with nothing, so I checked myself in anyway. I figured if I could get you to forgive me, at least I wouldn’t end up divorced.
“I never thought I’d actually lose the baby. I swear I didn’t lose it on purpose just to frame you! I’ve had so many abortions that it’s really hard for me to get pregnant. This was my last chance at a baby. How could I ever use my own child to frame you?
“So when the nurse said you’d paid her to make me lose the baby, I was so furious that I went after you. I couldn’t lose my baby and my rich husband and end up without a dime on top of it!
“Then I’d really have nothing left. Nora, I’ll own up to everything I did back then, but I swear I didn’t lose the baby on purpose to frame you.”
Nora watched her bawl and slap her own face, then asked flatly, “So?”
Tanya dropped to her knees with a thud too, tears streaking her face as she looked up at Nora and begged. “Please forgive me! I lost the only baby I’ll ever have. I can never get pregnant again. My husband’s divorcing me, and my parents won’t even let me come home.
“I’ve lost everything. Please just forgive me. I promise I’ll stay far away from you, and I’ll confess to the whole world everything I ever did to you.”
Tanya had tried to cash in on this whole mess, so now she was facing charges for extortion and defamation, and the sentences could stack. She was desperate to stay out of prison.
Nora watched her grovel and didn’t feel a shred of pity.
“Why should I forgive you?” she said. “If I didn’t have people looking out for me, I’d be the one charged with aggravated assault. I’d be the one facing prison, and you’d be walking around free with someone else’s money in your pocket.”
She went cold and leaned in a little closer to Tanya, who had frozen stiff. “You should’ve seen this coming when you twisted the truth and sicced the whole internet on me. You got exactly what you deserved. Forgive you? Not a chance!”
When Tanya realized Nora had no intention of forgiving her, she shot to her feet, glaring daggers. “If it weren’t for you, I never would’ve ended up in the hospital! I never would’ve gotten the wrong medication or

This is your fault, so you have to forgive me!”

Spencer was so mad that he actually laughed. He turned to Nora. “They’re almost here. Go sit down for a minute. I’ll deal with this woman.”
Then, he rounded on Tanya. “I’ve never met anyone as shameless as you. You tried to shake someone down, and karma came for your baby. Oh, wait, it wasn’t even three months along, so it wasn’t a fetus yet, just an embryo. And you had the nerve to demand $50,000,000? For one lousy egg with your garbage genes…
Spencer had spent years working for General Stratton, and it showed. He was loud, and he didn’t mince words. Wherever he went, he spoke for the General, and the General’s connections were enough to make even the most powerful people in the city nervous.
Tanya shrank back like a scared rabbit and didn’t dare make a peep.
Now, she wished she’d kept her mouth shut and begged a little longer. If a big shot like Spencer was willing to tear into her on Nora’s behalf, then talking back like that had been the dumbest move she could’ve made.
Just then, Nora heard engines outside and walked to the door.
Julian’s Maybach and Ryder’s red Ferrari were pulling up, followed by a whole line of luxury cars. The Maybach beat the Ferrari by a hair and stopped in front, and the Ferrari pulled in right behind it.
Julian threw the car into park, flung open his door, and ran to Nora. “Nora.”
Ryder was a step behind, but he reached her fast. “Nora, they didn’t do anything to you, did they?”
Wren hurried over too. “Nora, are you okay?”
Nora looked at them and smiled. “Wren, Ryder, I’m fine,” she said hoarsely. “Don’t worry.”
Julian had gotten there first, and she’d skipped right over him. His worried look gave way to one that was half hurt, half sulky. “Nora.”
Nora hooked her arm through his and leaned against him, limp and drained.
Julian immediately slipped an arm around her waist to steady her.
Nora told Ryder, “I’m okay. They didn’t do anything to me. I’m just really tired.
“Ryder, could you take Wren home? We’ll talk another day.”
She was exhausted and felt awful. After hours of going from hot to cold and back again, she was pretty sure she was coming down with something.
Ryder saw how pale she was and how hoarse she sounded, so he didn’t push. “Sure thing. If you need anything, Nora, just call. I’ll be there in a heartbeat.”
“Julian, let’s go home,” Nora said, her voice rough.
