Unfortunately, Julian’s expensive belt and dress pants were blocking Nora’s view. She pressed her lips together. For the first time in her life, she understood just how tempting a man’s body could be, and that belt and those pants were seriously in the way.
She reached right for his belt. She was staring at him so hungrily and moving so impatiently that Julian had to swallow hard. He pressed his hand over hers. “Nora, shower first.”
He picked her up and carried her into the bathroom. Behind the frosted glass, they held each other and kissed, shedding their clothes piece by piece…
The water rushed down over them, and little by little, Nora started to come back to her senses.
Julian had her pinned in the bathtub, his body pressed tight against hers. He looked at her, flushed and desperate. “Nora, is this okay?” he asked hoarsely.
Nora was halfway sober by now. At this point, she could probably ride it out without him. But one look at his face told her he was at his limit. She could feel how badly he wanted her. Maybe she could let herself go, just this once.
She wrapped her arms around his neck, tipped her head back, and leaned into him. “Yes,” she whispered.
Julian stopped holding back. He bent his head to kiss her and lowered himself over her.
Nora arched against him. They were right there, seconds away from crossing that line.
But then, there was a heavy thud. Julian, who’d been tense and ready a moment ago, suddenly went limp like a puppet with its strings cut and slumped on top of her with his full weight.
Nora had been ready for him, and for a moment, she was too stunned to move. Then, she shot upright. “Julian!”
Julian didn’t respond. He just lay there on top of her, dead weight, his arms hanging limply in the water.
“Julian!” Nora screamed.
She shoved hard and rolled him off her.
Julian sank limply into the bathwater. He didn’t even cough or sputter. He was out cold, and she couldn’t even tell whether he was still alive.
“Julian! Don’t you dare scare me like this!” Nora hauled him up out of the water and patted his cheeks hard.
But his eyes stayed shut. He didn’t react at all.
Nora checked his pulse. It was erratic and pounding. The toxin that had been kept in check was now spreading through his whole body, and it was going straight for his heart and brain.
She frowned hard. “If this keeps up, he could go into cardiac arrest or end up brain-dead.”
In other words, he could die. Julian was in serious danger.

Nora gritted her teeth, dragged him out of the tub, and somehow got him onto the bed. Then, she wrestled him into a bathrobe.
His eyes were still shut. “Julian, wake up!” She patted his face, calling his name over and over. This wasn’t normal. Something was seriously wrong with him.
Nora patted his cheeks a few more times, then pressed several pressure points on his body. Soon enough, it worked.
Julian slowly opened his eyes. Something twisted and terrifying loomed over him, but somehow, it also looked a little like Nora.
When Nora saw his eyes open, she was overjoyed. “Julian, you’re awake!”
For a second, Julian thought he could see Nora and hear her voice. But it didn’t last. Soon, all he could see were monsters, and all he could hear was their snarling. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to tell the monsters apart from Nora, and the nightmare apart from reality.
Nora watched him open his eyes for only a second before shutting them again. Then, she saw him clutching the blanket in both fists. The veins stood out on the backs of his hands and on his forehead. “Julian, what’s wrong?”
She quickly reached for his wrist to check his pulse and figure out what was going on.
But the moment she touched his hand, Julian reacted like he’d been attacked. He grabbed her wrist, hard.
Nora sucked in a sharp breath. His grip was so painful that it felt like her bones were about to snap. She tried to pry his fingers loose. “Julian, let go! You’re hurting me!”
But Julian held on like a steel trap. The harder she pried, the tighter he squeezed, until she really thought he was going to crush the bones in her wrist.
“Julian!” Nora couldn’t break his grip, so she smacked his arm hard, right on a pressure point.
